Form & Formlessness: Questioning aesthetic abstractions through art projects, cross-disciplinary studies and product design education.2007Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This research is based on empirical, embodied studies aimed to generate and regenerate aesthetic reasoning through three approaches:

    • an educational approach concerned with developing an aesthetic discipline, supporting a formgiving process aimed to create tangible artifacts.
    • an art-based approach supporting an open exploration of distortion and formlessness
    • a multi-disciplinary exploratory approach concerned with aesthetic experiences shared in laborations demonstrating complexity and transformation.

The overall aim of the thesis is to explore different types of aesthetic abstractions that elaborate aesthetic reasoning about form and formlessness. The thesis develops methods and models for aesthetic investigation that support, challenge and go beyond the normative conceptions of beauty, with high relevance for teaching 3-D formgiving aesthetics and research by design methodologies. A central method applied throughout the entire research project is a cooperative inquiry method engaging students and experienced professionals as co-researchers in embodied/ interactive physical form studies and laborations.

The content of the thesis is presented in three parts relating to the approaches above:

-Part 1 defines an aesthetic nomenclature organized within a taxonomy of form in space. This aesthetic taxonomy is outlined in five levels based on essential aesthetic abstractions, emphasizing structure and inner movement in relation to the intention for the development of a gestalt. It originates from the educational program of Alexander Kostellow and Rowena Reed and has been further developed through an iterative educational process using a Concept-translation-form method, resulting in the Evolution of Form (EoF)-model. This EoF-model reciprocally weaves together geometric structures and organic principles into a sequence of seven-stages. To question the normative principles of beauty inherent in the EoF-model, a bipolar +/- spectrum was introduced at each stage to expand the model, aiming for a more inclusive approach to aesthetics.

-Part 2, both challenges and expands the aesthetic reasoning in part 1 through i) solo sculptural exhibitions exploring properties of distortion and transparency in a constructivist art community ii) collaborative projects with physicists concerning infinity and studies of continuous complex curvatures and iii) explorative studies of material breakdown and non-visual studies with ID masters students at Konstfack.

    - Part 3 problematizes the taxonomy of form by applying methods and results from a cross-disciplinary study of complexity and transformation involving artists, physicists, designers and architects. The three year study explored temporal events of changing phenomena and formlessness that did not comply with any traditional aesthetic norms. Based on the experience from 12 laborations, three models were developed: The Transformation-model and Framing the dialogue-model were developed to physically interact with as well as to document and discuss change and transformation through bipolar reasoning. The Aesthetic phase transition-model was developed to capture the particular properties expressed in a transformation and unify stable objects with changing events.

In conclusion, the thesis claims the value of an inclusive aesthetic mode of abstract reasoning in the scientific and design communities.  A provisional 3 modes of abstraction-model is presented placing numeric, linguistic and aesthetic modes of abstraction as interdependent within a spectrum from separation to contextualization.

    Abstract [en]

The design research community is beginning to recognize the organizing capacity of form as a scientific method of its own right. The aim of this study was to a) develop a pedagogically framed case study method that applied a participatory action research approach and b) create a 3-D form model bridging geometric- to organic structures. A 10-step-concept-translation-form method was developed which resulted in a “Evolution of form” model with two axes: The first horizontal axis presents a sequence of geometrically derived forms that gradually take on organic qualities of convexities and concavities. The second axis expands the model in a vertical dimension to include a bipolar spectrum at each stage. This vertical dimension opens up a dichotomy between congruent and incongruent properties in relation to original features of the geometric form.

The discussion deals with the active formgiving process; the need for sculptural awareness and the inner sense of form; validity of the created method and model and finally the pros and cons of aesthetical abstractions that build on geometric references.

    Abstract [en]

The authors use new aesthetic criteria concerning structures and properties to explain parallel concepts within theoretical astroparticle physics and contemporary form/compositional research. These aesthetic criteria stem from complex curvature models developed both in string theory and in artistic perceptual research on transitional surfaces and concavities. The authors compare the complex curvatures of the mathematically derived Calabi-Yau manifold with one of Akner Koler's sculptures, which explores an organic interpretation of the looping curvature of a Möbius strip. A goal of the collaboration is to gain experience and insight into the twisting paradoxical forces in the 3D world and to explore the properties of transparency as applied to the Calabi-Yau manifold and a point cloud translation of Akner Koler's sculpture.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It was suggested that dirt was a way of falling away from perfection and through introducing or allowing dirt you could avoid the sterile and lifeless. A ephemeral and intangible entity, dirt is, by its nature, an elusive creature.

This intangibility encouraged me to draw a clearer definition for myself of what dirt meant. If dirt was not limited to patina and grime how could it be understood in terms of design. This is the essence of my thesis.

Still Life: ett förvaringssystem som ändrar vårt förhållningsätt till matslöseri2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The report describes a degree project on a bachelor level that has been performed at the Industrial Design Department at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design. The project is about how to generate a concept for a computer bag where the bag is able to adapt to the variation of the amount of things that the user would like to bring just for that specific day. Focus in theproject have been to look at the general needs for the users when carrying a computer and other belongings, the desirable functionsfor a possible solution of product for those specific needs and thegestalt of the meeting between the organic body of the user and the square like shape of the technique.

The target group has been everyone that carries around a computer almost everyday. Sweeping for all the interviewed people were the request that the product should be representative to bring thecomputer in to the office. Words of values that were used in theprocess were adaptable, reserved and functional.

The working process was divided into a mapping phase, a gestalt phase that was divided into two sketching phases and one phasefor defining the final concept. Finally there where a phase forbuilding the model. The objective for the project has been to gain a greater knowledge for how to run a design project from idea tovisualisation of final concept by a physical model. The objective has also been to generate the gestalt of the concept on a exploring basis and in a more sculptural way with, for the project, given functions in mind.

The outcome of the project is a backpack that is divided into modules that can be separated from each other. The concept has three parts. The part that is closest to the user is the back part that holds the shoulder straps. To that part the user can connect eitherthe computer case or the ad on bag. This concept makes it possible for the user to choose if he or she want o bring the computer bag or the ad on bag or both. Because of that the computer unit can be removed from the backpack and it allows the user to just bring that part into the meeting and avoids the extra attention that he or she can get by bringing the whole backpack. The user remains a reserved style without question. The concept makes it possible for the user to get a product that is in line with he’s or she’s needs when thinking of the bags ability to adapt, to keep a reserved style and maintain a satisfied level of functionality.

Mobiltelefoni i ett u-landsscenario: ett kandidatexamensarbete kring begreppet hållbarhet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Rocks in Vogue: on material flows within electronic devices2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Landscapes have been exploited and polluted by humans in order to obtain metals. Materials are treated as commodities: extracted, used inside our devices and appliances, then discarded as useless matter. The timespan of efficiency is shortened more and more due to obsolescence, material desire and constant innovation. That’s a paradoxical perspective compared to the deep time those metals embody, born in the outer space from star collision and arriving to Earth as meteors, 4 billion years ago.

Rocks in vogue is an exploration on the material flows within the electronic devices production and their disposal. Very often the connection between consumers and source is invisible and well-masked behind the slick surfaces of our laptops and smartphones. Through the disassembling of old broken devices, the metals found inside represent values, stories and resistance. The material’s agency is expressed through low-power ceramic batteries; the elementary reaction moving from copper to iron represents a narrative of slow processes, material exhaustion and care. The batteries move from being something that supports our technological desires to statement objects that make things speak.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I present the process, learnings and final results of my master project. The project focuses on the education Swedish for immigrants, SFI, and how design can play a role in improving the education to better meet the needs of the learners and become more of a step towards inclusion.

I identify two learner groups; the experienced and the novice learner, with different needs and prerequisites. During the project I develop a focus towards the novice learner and the problem I call the vicious circle. By this term I refer to that too big gaps between the learners former knowledge/experiences and the education results in lost motivation and self-esteem and many learners giving up or getting stuck in the education.

Throughout the project I use an iterative process, in three loops, where I involve the stakeholders in the development of my ideas through interviews, observations and colaborative workshops.

My final proposal is a the learning service “Matprat”, which invites the learners as co-creators of the education and puts their experiences and knowledge in the centre of learning.

Uncertainty Principle: a study of the uncertain relationship between people and object2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When we observe or use something, its property seems to change because of the way we establish relationships with it. Inspired by the Uncertainty Principle – a physical theory published by Heisenberg in the year of 1927 – I take both people and objects as something always in an uncertain status. We cannot fully define objects, but only try to understand and live with it in a complex and constantly changing context.Three pieces of furniture are created to visualize the idea about how the relationships between people and objects could be from this viewpoint, exploring how far away people could accept the imperfect but surprising experience of the world.

Emotionally Meaningful Homecare: Designing for good relationships between patients and devices2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Industrial design is an expanding field. Through new research, discussion and explorations the definitions of what designers can and should do is constantly discussed and redefined. The starting point for my master thesis is the investigation of the concept of emotional durability. In other words, I have looked into how designers could create more meaningful relationships between users and products. It concerns product style norms, terminologies for describing relationship types, as well as a product’s meaning to a user. In order to put learning outcomes into practice, this master thesis also involves a design project where I created a proposal for a new rehabilitation product. There is great potential in investigating how meaningful medical devices for the home should be designed. During my design process I try to dig into what it means to design medical products for a home environment. At the same time, I explore how to create emotionally durable experiences for the patients and increase the motivation in their rehabilitation. My proposal is a balance exercising device that introduces a new level of user interaction, which connects back to my research on emotional durability.

Future of Bio-Product Design: EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF BIOMATERIALS AND BIOPROCESSES ON FUTURE PRODUCT DESIGN2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Bio-based products is a hot topic for the future. The industry needs new materials and production methods. This project is looking at the consequences for industrial design when creating bio-products. The time perspective of the project is 30 years ahead. A future scenario was created based on extensive trendspotting research. The result is a product together with new design tools.

This salt and pepper shaker is grown with the use of bacteria that creates a biofilm. The bacteria are killed after the process and the biofilm remains. This growth process allow variation and give unique results every time, which opens up for an emotional bond to the product. Also if it breaks, it can heal itself, and you can keep on using your favorite shaker.

The result of the project is a proposal of how to deal with randomness in the design process and industrial production.

    Abstract [sv]

Beyond Smart: A Quest for the Humane2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Where is technology heading? And how will our behaviors towards these new innovations look? This project questions the direction of ”beyond smart” products, through scenarios within our everyday life. The work is both critical and speculative. Speculative in the sense that it is speculating in how a future scenario with ”beyond smart” products would look like. And by beyond smart I refer to the fact that the products would posses extreme features. Such as complexity and irationalism. But also to be spontaneous and self aware. At the same time the work is questioning, and perhaps criticising, if this sort of development really is beneficial for us or not. If we would turn to technology and smart products for a solution to our desires and problems, how would our human relationships towards each other look? And also how would we interact with these future products and what would the consequences of that be?

Sport vehicle & branding: racing sulky2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Fascination Travsport.

    Abstract [sv]

Terms and Conditions: exploring our becoming with the digital through designing objects for sensemaking2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internet and digitalization is changing our reality. Blurring away physical boundaries the Cloud ignores geographical distances. It is an enormous space to share information globally, it provides us with spectacular possibilities, but how is our entanglement with this digital dimension affecting us?

My aim is to explore our becoming with the digital and to evoke personal judgement in our everyday use of digital devices.

I explore by challenging my preconceptions through confrontation with situations and events alien to me. My curiosity drives me to make sense of my environment. I make sense through designing, through making.

My objects, the Haze, the Self Portal and Bad Habit/Phone cover, are all in different ways attemts to makes sense of immaterial aspects or phenomena in our relations to and through the digital. Through putting the objects in relation to your body you can yourself experience and feel these ambiguous relations and make bodily sense of them.

    SLR for professional press-photographers

is a conceptual form studie based on user observations. The digital technic has created new opportunities regarding form, function and has changed work procedure for today’s photographers. The concept is based on two camera bodies with squared sensors, which communicate with the same external backup- and monitor-device. The formats proportions are digitally adjusted and downloaded wireless by the external backup device. The external device is also used for Live View and can be attached on top of the camera body or on the back. After the last shot, the two photo parts of the system can be put aside and the external screen and backup device can be used for previews and uploading.

Agreements of other Normatives: a performative workshop for designers2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis consists of a workshop that investigates theperformative act of designers in producing gendered productaesthetics. Product designers make many active choicesin the project they are working on, but what about thenot so active choices, the once that just happen becauseit looks right or because it fits the product? By putting thegendered assumptions of fomgiving into the hands of thedesigners, I hope to generating a realisation of the (re)creationof the gender norms of society into products. I wish toput the designers in a position where they formgive wrongin relation to the norms of product aesthetics, so that theform feels unfitting or misplaced. This to expose the suggestionof how the development of products not only isan iterative design process, but also an iterative processof re-installing norms and objectives of society into thedesign. The end product of this project will be a workshopwhere the designers gets to try out how another normativeagreement of product aesthetics would appear.

A Story of Placement: A habitat solution for communities in a situation of displacement2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A Story of placement looks at displacement in Colombia during three different time periods: 529 years ago during colonization, today, and a speculative scenario in 10 years.

The project springs from traditional ecological knowledge developed by indigenous Colombian communities, and applies it to create a habitat proposal for a displaced community in Medellin.

How can we generate stories of placement in the near future?

The Kogi, Arhuaco, Kankuamo, and Wiwa descendants from the Taironas, have been living in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta after being displaced from the lowlands during the colonization. They have remained isolated from the western cultures preserving their knowing and being and living harmoniously with their territory.

Colombia has today around 5.6 million people in a situation of displacement because of the armed conflict, natural disasters, or big land acquisitions by corporations.

The project develops a progressive, sustainable, portable, and productive housing solution for communities in  a situation of displacement, inspired by indigenous communities from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the North of Colombia.

    Abstract [en]

The main goal in this thesis was to make people want to rent products instead of buying them, and this meant that I needed to find attractive benefits and gains living up to the losses when choosing to rent instead of buying the products. The biggest findings here were mainly the solutions of home delivery of the products and the package categorization of age. Offering the customers other services in form of expert advises, serving them information about the new life tocome, and developing an app, to followthe trends in society were some ways of making the service more attractive and invite more customers to use it in the future.

    Abstract [sv]

Design Thinking in Business Innovation2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The world is undergoing change and the disintegration of the old economy is becoming evident. Production is moving to low cost countries and competition is growing fierce. In order to stay competitive, companies around the world recognises the need to become more innovative. In order to achieve this it is imperative to balance and compliment the linear business thinking that still rule the managerial body. Leading research in this area suggest that the key to innovation in business development lies within the creative thinking of the design field. This paper describes a joint master degree project that seeks to test these theories and develop methods and protocols to put them into practice. So the question is, what happens when one use industrial  design as a tool to innovate business in the Creative Economy? The research group consists of four industrial designers from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and four marketing students from School of Business, Stockholm University. During the project we applied action research and introspection in a case study where new business strategies where formulated for a live company as our empirical base. The process proved more difficult but also more rewarding than initially anticipated and resulted in several new potential strategies for the company while providing valuable insight and experience in interdisciplinary team work in this field. This paper presents suggestions to how design thinking and business thinking can be combined in the process of developing business strategies and accentuates some of the skills and qualities that inherently drive this process. The collaboration investigates the synergy between designers and business managers and illustrates the potential in combining these competences to find new ways to create, re-define and develop businesses in the creative economy.

    Abstract [en]

In society today, consumption are rapidly increasing. At the same time environmental issues like global warming and sustainability are causing loud debates. To me, soon to be a graduate industrial designer, it felt very intersting and challenging to work with the difficult and contradictory task of designing a product to decrease consumption.

The final thesis work has resulted in a design proposal for an iceskate, especially designed for rental. The final result is based on interviews with experts, skaters and potential users. The work was limited to primarily put focus on a few choosen expressions and values of the product and the design was based mainly on how the product communicates to the user.
