I Want People to See Me : The Potential of Film Pedagogy to Promote Social Participation (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate which media and information literacy skillsindividuals at a daily activity center with intellectual disabilities may develop during a shortfilm project and how these skills can contribute to increased participation in a democraticsociety. The theory is based on Renee Hobbs' guidelines for media and information literacyand Gert Biest's thoughts on learning as a way to” break into the world” and thereby becomean active subject. The method for this research include smaller film projects where theparticipants in the study created their own performative documentaries and field notes weretaken during the process. After the project the participants were interviewed about theirexperiences. During the film-projects, the participants' process was filmed, this material thenbecame the visual part of this study in the form of an participatory documentary that, incombination with the participants' own films, was shown at the spring exhibition ofKonstfack. The study argues that performative documentary-making in daily activity centercan develop new and strengthen existing MIL-skills. The competencies that were mostdistinctive were Analyze & Evaluate and Act. This could be interpreted as the project givingthe participants an opportunity to critically examine and analyze their surrounding world, then express their thoughts through film and thus act as active subjects. Another outcome ofthe study was all participants' great desire to be seen and to show off themselves, theirinterests or other personal aspects. Based on Biesta's thoughts on the subject and meeting theother, the participants' films become a way for them to enter into dialogue with the world, take up space and meet those who might not otherwise have had the chance.
