Memories From the Future: Closer than we dare to think

Abstract [en]

This is about fear. I feel deeply concerned about the direction in which we are heading: ineffective environmental policies, legal frameworks that disregard fundamental human rights. Everything is interconnected. Interior architecture, therefore, becomes a complex and multifaceted challenge. I fear failing, unable to find meaningful solutions. Even more frightful is that others may not even try.

I fear being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), as it advances rapidly. There is a growing concern among scientists about uncritically accepting AI-generated information. Without reflection, we risk perpetuating our biases within the systems we build - a dangerous feedback loop that confirms rather than questions.

My project explores how AI might influence society and, more specifically, the roles of interior architects. Using speculative fabulation, I construct this narrative to question what it truly means to design - and to be human. At the center of this thesis is a memory clinic set in a distant future; where the world burns in chaos and a former parking facility offers an escape - where memories are uploaded, identities archived and the line between life and death dissolves.

From this project, I believe that a deep understanding of how an experience unfolds will be essential to the future of interior architecture, as such insight can meaningfully inform and shape the design. This project is not a solution, but a provocation. It is a warning, a confession and an invitation to confront the fears we would rather ignore and to imagine futures we still have time to shape.
