Abstract [en]
Assembling Play/Unfolding Space explores opportunities for play in areas affected by war and crises. Using small means and simple methods, the work investigates how play and spatial change can be supported in locations with limited access to safe play environments, with the aim of temporarily transforming spaces not adapted for children into more inviting places. The project acts as a tool that enables children effected by displacement to play, construct and shape spatiality in their local surroundings.
The connection between play, participation, and placemaking is explored in the study, highlighting how these approaches can be applied in the design of environments for children. It draws on existing research into the role of art and play in psychosocial care, examining how creative activities can support resilience and foster a sense of place.
By applying the concept to the Swedish non-profit organization Better Shelter’s existing emergency response system, the project aims to reach a wide range of children and their families and thereby spread the potential for play and placemaking in temporary settlements and refugee camps.
