Abstract [en]

This project aims to study the edges of architecture, furniture, and art, with the purpose of building a foundation. This is conducted via the molding and through a series of architectural and artistic techniques. Architect Luigi Moretti gave moldings, profiles and cornices the assignment of punctuation of the architectural syntax. Walls, floors and ceiling being the main components to articulate with and moldings as the eternal conjunction. Acting as elements of transition between the architectural structuring of space and time (Moretti 1951). However beautiful and poetic this proclamation is, the molding is still considered inferior. In this project, the molding is brought to the limelight, and is used as the primary component in this syntax. The praxis of moldings and profiles is widely considered a language, one that you can read and that communicates. With a language comes rules; rules of proportion, combination and application and without them you might as well talk gibberish. To me and in this project, the comparison to music is closer, looking at the profiles as notes, together creating chords and later melodies.

The project spans across the area of Spatial Design as it touches upon questions regarding style, scale and methodology. It is an experimental study into the function, form and history of the interior molding. The focus is on the space between object/space and is framed by a free-style attitude to previous traditons.

The projects concludes technical findings and reframes the significance of the molding. Together this opens up a universe of forms and meanings to further develop and elaborate on.
