Staged Dining : The dining table as a site for social interaction (English)
Abstract [en]
”Staged Dining – The dining table as a site for social interaction” is a
project in interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack, Bachelor’s
Programme 2025. Staged Dining explores the dining table as a space for
community and gathering. For me, the kitchen and dining table have always
been the central gathering place—a space where family and friends come
together to share a meal, conversations, and presence. It is around the
dining table that relationships are built through discussion, understanding
and misunderstanding, shared spaces, and collective actions.
The project highlights the symbolic and social significance of the dining
table through the tools of interior architecture. A variety of methods
have been used throughout the process – including digital and analogue
sketching, scale models, prototypes, photography, video, drawing, and
observational studies. Through participatory workshops, participants
explore how meals unfold in different spatial arrangements. These sessions
analyse and challenge the scenography of dining—how we sit, interact, and
experience the act of eating together. The insights from these workshops
inform the design of the table, culminating in an exhibition where my
research takes physical form.
The aim of Staged Dining is to inspire and raise awareness of the potential
and limitations of the dining table. An unconventional table can spark
curiosity and reflection: Who do we invite? How do we eat together? Might
we challenge a habit we’ve never questioned, or invite more playfulness and
freedom into our meals? If the project can shift one person’s perception of
shared dining, it may contribute to a broader cultural shift toward stronger
social bonds.
