Macro fiber: Absorbing oil spills with unpurposed wool

Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the untapped potential of Swedish wool as a natural solution for cleaning small boat harbours across the entire water column. By collaborating with specialists in wool processing and absorption, the project led to the development of Macro Fibers: a thoughtfully designed product made almost entirely from repurposed wool, primarily sourced from the Swedish meat industry. With the ability to absorb oil up to 30 times its own weight (Sheep Industry News, 2010), wool presents an exciting, biodegradable alternative to the synthetic materials commonly used in water sanitation today. This work reimagines wool’s role in a marine context, giving new purpose to an overlooked material while challenging conventional, petroleum-based cleanup methods. The result is a playful yet serious investigation into how local, sustainable resources can contribute to cleaner waters and more circular design practices.
