Memories of Stockholm: Making Place through Weaving Space

Abstract [en]

This paper examined the process of observing and capturing Stockholm’s landscapes and imagery through weaving from the perspective of both a stranger and a resident. Having lived in multiple cities before settling in Stockholm, I investigated how urban spaces gradually became personal places of memory. The study reflected on how individual experiences shaped and distorted memories of a city, creating a subjective perception of place.Through weaving, I sought to materialise the fleeting boundaries formed by light and shadow, capturing the city as perceived through my own perspective and experiences. My research combined visual documentation, such as sketches, photographs, and diaries, with the tactile medium of weaving to interpret these shifting impressions. In contrast to the rapid consumption of images on small digital screens nowadays, weaving offered a slower, more contemplative process—one that allowed me to absorb and reinterpret moments at a different pace. By engaging in this gradual act of making, I attempted to hold onto and process experiences that might otherwise be fleeting. The resulting works aimed to translate personal and emotional encounters with Stockholm into textile forms, examining how memory, space, and materiality intertwined. Rather than depicting a fixed representation of the city, the woven works became a means of capturing the accumulation of moments and spatial experiences that ultimately shape my perception and memory of a place.
