Urban homes for common swifts

Abstract [en]

This project aims to highlight how we humans can design for other forms of life and

to include other animals like the bird swift in the urban planning, rather than exclu-

ding them, causing habitat loss and loss of biodiversity in urban environments.

Common swifts are endangered birds that are closely linked to us humans. They

have built nests under roof tiles and other cavities for centuries and learned to live

with us humans, but due to the renovations of old buildings for example, their nesting

sites have become fewer. My thesis includes a proposal to make urban environments

more inclusive towards common swifts by developing a nest box, that can be placed

on a standard 90 mm drainpipe. I think it is interesting to build onto structures that

already exist rather than introducing something completely new. I choose drainpi-

pes as there are a lot of them where only the inside are used.
