Abstract [en]
AbstractIn Less Than Unity, Ljubomir Popović explores the intersection of urban transformation, displacement, infrastructure, and artistic practice through a personal and political lens. Drawing from his experience as part of the Balkan war diaspora in Sweden, Popović examines how marginalized communities navigate spaces of gentrification, war, and exclusion. His work reclaims abandoned materials and infrastructural remnants as acts of resistance and memory, positioning artistic intervention as a critical tool for reclaiming space and history. Influenced by concepts such as “creative destruction” and inspired by artists like Gordon Matta-Clark, Popović interrogates how infrastructure operates as both a carrier of power and a potential medium for subversion. The essay critiques capitalist urbanization and colonial legacies in urban planning, while emphasizing the material and symbolic roles of place memory, ruins, and invisible networks. Through site-specific installations and material-based research, Less Than Unity offers a practice-based framework for confronting displacement, exposing ideological control, and preserving fragmented urban histories.
