Design och oro: En studie om inredning och möbeldesign och dess möjligheter att minska oro hos dementa 2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Between 1999 and 2009, I followed three of my grandparents, all of whom suffered from dementia. Numerous times, when I visited them in their nursing homes, I was met by residents of the ward who were very unhappy. Through conversations at home with my family, I understood more and more that this was a commonly occurring problem at nursing homes. All too often it was solved with heavy medication, which made the residents tired and they slept more often.

During my undergraduate education at Konstfack, I have reflected on whether I, as an interior designer and furniture designer, can have an influence on spaces and furniture so that dementia patients can experience greater calm and security. The idea is if that I perceive the environment as calm and secure, I will also be calm and secure.

In my degree project, I want to study how interior design and furniture design can contribute to decreased agitation in people with dementia in nursing homes.

    Abstract [en]

How do we experience space and architecture? How do they affect us, and could there be further dimensions in addition to the three that we are used to seeing? My degree project is an investigation into how the world we live in may be expanded through memory. with new dimensions and portals opened up allowing us to focus on things that would otherwise be lost in the periphery. Space-body-time-memory are all elements that are required in order to experience that which has architectural values. but which is easily forgotten.

Objects of Ambiquity: An Introduction into the Role of the Object Mediator2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The project

Objects Of Ambiquity: an introduction into the role of the object mediator, looks at a possible future situation where the designer as been installed within such a situation; as a creative mediator, working with historical records and artefacts within an institutions collection. The story of Objects of Ambiquity is a vessel used to highlight the role of fiction within historical records. Whilst doing this it simultaneously question’s the designers possible role within this context and how this will alter our understanding of what a museum is in the future.

The book is split into two parts, the first a fiction which follows the object mediator during the first months of employment, and the second, a non fiction which explains the choices made by the object mediator and the background of the project.

Funghi: En serie möbler för ökat välbefinnande, genom association till naturen.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Från sommarhus till fritidshus: ett magisterexamensarbete2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Stucc it: A project about copies and how to transform these to stucco2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

If I were to explain the phenomenon Stucco before I did my thesis, I would have said that it is a plaster paste that is used within architecture and interior architecture, that carries a lot of history and tradition. Stucco is a genuine handcraft and this element has the ability to affect a space in many ways.

There are many things I find interesting with Stucco but my aim has been to experiment with this phenomenon.

How does stucco affect a space, if it is unexpected objects that are pictured in it,instead of the classic greenery?

I have treated the questions: What if I show the human touch a bit more, the history behind the copying of an original? And how does a space turn out, where the Stucco is closer to the body, and not only to be looked at from a distance?

Copying has been my method, and I’ve been using this in different ways. I have explored different ways of copying ordinary things, and I’ve aimed to use the qualities I have found in copying to something interesting. Something that might be called a stucco.

Take kagu: bamboo plywood furniture2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

“Long long time ago, there was an old Bamboo Cutter man called Taketori-no-Okina. He cut bamboos from forests and used it for many different daily tools.”

This is the first sentence from “Princess Kaguya”, Taketori-Monogatarior Kaguya-hime in Japanese. This is the tale of the Bamboo Cutter that was written in 9th or 10th century Japanese folktale. It is considered the oldest existing Japanese narrative. The story is about the life of a mysterious girl called Kaguya-hime, who was discovered as a baby inside a glowing bamboo plant by Taketori-no-Okina. According to the first sentence of this tale there is a very close relationship between human life and bamboo in Japan.

TAKE, bamboo is one of the typical trees in Asia. I grew up in the countryside in Japan and my house was located just in front of a bamboo forest. I also have some experiences of using bamboos the same as in the tale, “Princess Kaguya”. When I walk in the bamboo forest, I have a very special feeling that is intricately related to my childhood background. Nowadays there are several problems about bamboo forest, but on the other hand bamboo itself is focused as an ecological and sustainable material.

There is an interesting project involving bamboo forests that is going on near my hometown in Japan. This project is producing bamboo plywood and furniture made from this material.

For my Masters examination, I have designed furniture made of this bamboo plywood related to my background and my feelings towards the bamboo forest.

Om möbler2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Texterna blir mindre. Möblerna står i fokus texterna finns i bakgrunden.

    Abstract [en]

Consider time as a continuation of ‘now’s. Not a single one is the same. So consistent and everlasting, one can easily forget its weight, take it for granted.

One meets miracles at every single ‘now’, although some are forgotten and only some remain. These objects grasp time from the sunlight and shed unexpected, unrepeatable moments for you to cherish. It unveils pieces of time through the meetings between light and light-refracting materials.

    Abstract [sv]

Berättelsen, tolkningen, uterummet: en lustgårds-gestaltning på Stadsmuseets innergård2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Innergården ska fungera dels som en “happening-oas” med ett antal fasta och tillfälliga aktiviteter, likaväl som ett kontemplativt rum med en “scenografi sk gestaltning”. Gestaltningens utformning kommer vara min tolkning utav beställarens (Stadsmuseets/Kulturförvaltningens) referenser som är följande;

Frid på jord2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In reality, everyone has psychological problems with different levels. As for mental illness, the people who have slight mental illness can balance his/her mind through self-adjustment in short periods. The patient with slight mental illness can heal through mental treatments without medications. The moderate and strong patients can still go back to a normal life after they take the standard or advanced mental illness treatments. In fact, it is not easy to take the first step to do therapy with your own courage and even if you take the first step, you still have to wait a long time to get started with therapy. The mental illness problem is getting more and more serious. It will affect our life and development of the whole world.

My goal for this Master’s project is to design a space for the people who have mental health problems. In this space, he/she can express his/her emotions and get better healing effects from it. This space also works for the therapy process. Using this kind of healing space as a home for the patient, he/she can live there for a period of time and do the therapy inside this ‘home-space’.

In Between: ett sökande och undersökande av relationen mellan rum och kropp2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

kopimi - kopiyu2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With thoughts about questioneing ownership and the protection of design, I want with my bachelorproject “kopimi-kopiyu” try finding different paths for my work and ideas. In a world that is being more and more regulated in favour for the bigger companies, I want to act and create among alternatives forces such as Creative Commons and Open-Source.With Internet as a starting plattform, I want to communicate my ideas that we can consume our products in different ways. Such a way could be that you produce some of the parts yourself. Maybe a way that also will lead you away from your daily “empty consumtion” of goods. Some of my projects tend to lean into the field of do-it-yourself, a field I find fullfilling. My idea about the “D.I.Y” is that we should also have more do-it-together. A way of doing more things together could be that we open up our wood workshops in the public schools during the weekends. They could function as a platform for people to meet other people. My work could then act as a catalyser bringing people and ideas together. With the spreading of my design and the knowledge about the tools I use, I believe in a society that is less focused on money and more focused about people.Nothing is carved in stone (except runic writing) - anything is possible if we want to change.

Ornament och furu: ett sökande efter nya formuttryck2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this work I want to show that the fabric´s feminineconnection make upholstered furniture play a subordinate role in the design world.Usually the fabric on a chair is replaceable and is not considered to play as big part of the furniture as the form. By constantly making the textile replaceable the fabric is put aside, diminished and subordinated to the furniture's form. What does that do to furniture and interiors? My goal in this project was to design and produce a piece of furniture where the established order was not followed. As a start of this project I have looked at, and photographed images on textiles from Lilli Zickermans photo collection of old Swedish home interior textiles. I have looked at the cushions and pillows that has been an integrated part of the old chair's appearance and comfort. I have been inspired by the photographed images and I have continued to work with my own expressions and patterns in that tradition on a big easy chair. I have matched patterns from Lilli Zickermans photo collection with crafts, patterns and expressions with common shapes from around the world, from anonymous textile traditions often carried on by women. Pattern forms such as the rhomb, the square and the circle repeats in most cultures. I have tried to understand why patterns from all over the world look so similar. I have found aspects such as cultural meetings and movements but also a common feeling for patterns and the use of the same techniques and tools.Another important aspect of this work has been working with recycled materials. I have in the making of this chair used worn winter jackets for the padding and the surface is covered with strips cut from worn t-shirts in tricot. In this project I have worked with both collections of clothes, patterns and quotes.

    Abstract [en]

To use others specific competence in a boathouse

Interior architects and specialists that cooperate, find more possible choices than the prevailing standardised solutions, and are able to break the norms that dominate their respective fields. Both of us use our specific tools and learn from one another when we meet. This leads to architecture that is more multifaceted as well as a greater understanding of our respective skills.

The investigation regarding the power of collaboration will be conducted in the context of a houseboat: a specific building, with specific functions.

It is logical to come into contact with scents, lights, sounds, details and functions in that specific building. We will create parts that could be situated in that kind of building.

Is it possible to see opinions and values in architecture? Starting from political viewpoints, I’ve taken up the ‘election cottage’ and its layout.

Election cottages today are often all rather alike, regardless of the party using them. To be able to see the various parties’ values and viewpoints in the layout of the place where they meet the voters is something that benefits both the voters and the parties themselves.

Årsta havsbad i mitt hjärta: en renässans för badlivet2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hybrid betyder korsningsform.

    Abstract [en]

This project explores perspectives toward furniture design and product design with an integration of play as a design method. The journey will end with a set of furniture possessing a distinct personality derived from the stated design process, not a playful character as by design objective. The interplay between ‘Play’ quality and design practice is hoped to result in an optional way a designed object could have functioned.

    Abstract [no]

Kontraster: ett utforskande arbete om ljus med utgångspunkt ur skuggan, reflektionen & färgtemperaturen2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ljus i sekundärform.

specific and generic domestic space: a design approach to enhance the ritual in daily activities2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Scale of time

William Empson writes that the length of a human life and the conscious moment are the two main scales by which the human mind measures time. With one too large to sense and the other too difficult to identify, my project instead uses the length of individual daily activities as units - eating breakfast is a time unit, cooking a lunch is another time unit – to help make time perceptible, to be aware of the present, and to experience the ritual in daily life. Not every daily activity possesses its own specific time span and therefore I chose basic everyday activities that do (eating, cooking, sleeping, etc.) and defined them as specific activities.

    Activity modules

Based on informal surveys and my own everyday routine at home, I have defined 7 specific activities. Each specific activity has been given a customized moveable activity module to provide a place for that activity. The negative space created between activity modules within the project's spatial framework I called generic space and is used for interstitial unintentional activities.

    Spatialframework

Sarah Wigglesworth’s Straw Bale House and Go Hasegawa’s House in Sakuradairepresent two approaches to organizing space based on activities – combining and breaking down. My project takes a third approach by providing a spatial framework within which functional layouts can be rearranged. Each activity module can easily change location inside the spatial framework based on which activity is taking place.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The underlying question in this thesis is: what is sharing in and of public space? The text has the form of a fictitious discussion about sharing of assets and space, taking place in the city. Culture of sharing, Trust and Conflict are the main topics, followed by a chapter About The Bleacher. This chapter is about the practical part of the thesis, which ended up in a bridge-like structure designed for the future Jubileumsparken in Gothenburg. The structure - The Bleacher - is a second floor above ground level and is therefor a somewhat distanced space. It creates a different room for action than in the middle of the street. The design process is illustrated in the end of the essay.

Klara färdiga gå: en gestaltning för ökad fysisk aktivitet i urbana rum2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The title: ”Klara färdiga GÅ” can be translated as ”Ready steady GO”, and is ment as a request to start move. In this project I want to invite people to walk more by creating creative, demanding and playful walkways and paths, where the body can be allowed to work just a tiny bit harder.

It’s because walking means exercise and fresh air, for free and without spetial equipment. Walking can also be fun, it allows people to stop, change direction and experience things.

I think activity should be fun, inspired by children playground my project is a contribution to how adults might stay healthier in a city, where too often healthy activity is solely confined to the gym or sports fields. Our urban spaces are not just for the purposes of work, tourism, retail and all that supposedly important stuff, but also for having fun, for letting go and being ourselves.

My project isn´t a common interior design project, and may be seen more as a work for a landscape architect. But there´s also a thin line between this professions. For me it´s a project about furnishing the outside and desig good and healthy public spaces.

Interspace: An investigation about threshold spaces2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Threshold spaces often contain a narrative moment that holds both the past, the present and the future. It is ambiguous since it can both connect an separate. It works as a transition through spatial sequences, where it changes from one position to another. They thrive on spatial ambivalence and the expectation of what is to come.

In my investigation, I want to highlight these qualities. By unfolding methods from photography, threshold  spaces can be enhanced. Working in-between mediums such as photography, drawing and models. Transforming the findings into new space. I want to invite the visitors into a moment, going through, inside and around the space.

Working with photography I highlight different parts to later take it further into 3D modeling, to show my findings in the image. After this translation in the digital world, it comes back to the analogue world again. Here it’s possible to work in a less controlled way than in the computer. So the method goes through different stages in representations from 2D analogue to 3D modeling.

Joy(n): creating multi-use objects for children2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report deals with the importance and need for more adaptable objects for children to use as furniture as well as for playing in their everyday life. It discusses the importance of such objects that are more suitable for play and movement to aid the physical and psychological development of the child, as well as adressing the nature and importance of play itself in this process. It also gives a short overview of previous furniture designed for children and tries to answer the question of why it is important to allow for the element of play when designing furniture for children, and gives some examples of where this has or has not been taken into consideration.

The report then introduces a new set of objects, the Joy(n)- line, that consists of various components that can be arranged and rearranged to suit the children´s wishes and needs, building and transforming them into traditional furniture such as beds, tables, shelves and seating, but at the same time being "things" that they can climb on and play with.

The working process is followed through sketches and model works, examples of trying out the product are demonstrated, and the end result evaluated .

Metamorfos: från växtfibrer till rumslig gestaltning2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A lighting project. Light and mood – pendant lamps for public rooms.Several hundred years ago it was the sun and the daylight that governed our lives. Nowadays, however, most of us probably take light for granted. By simply pressing a button we can continue our lives even after darkness has fallen. We often put on the lights even before the dusk has fallen, or as soon as it is a bit cloudy outside. What was luxury in the old days has now become ordinary. An important reason for working with lighting is that the branch is on the verge of great changes since the light bulb is about to disappear. Producers and designers must think anew and find new solutions for light fixtures. I consider that we as designers must weigh in the consequences our decisions have for the environment. To pay attention to the life cycle of the product ”from the cradle to the grave” must become a natural aspect of our thinking. I have therefore designed a family of light fixtures with three different individuals and three unique characters, in the hope of a brighter future!

Mini house: ett modernt friggebodskoncept2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When does a flat surface become an architectural space? Is a two-dimensional surface also a three-dimensional space?

This is a story of the process of making a chair. A story that combines my past and my present way of thinking and working within the field of Design & Architecture.

It is an examination of reduction - or to be more precise - the journey from complexity to simplicity. How the knowing of an item and its function can reduce superfluous.

And the theme is the chair as an archetype – a symbol of itself.
