    Abstract [en]

In my work I experiment with ‘de-imagineering’ and intervening into the ‘urban commons,’ through practices of altering and re-purposing existing structures. The work is both informal and transgressive in its methodology, with the core intention to investigate and participate in the shaping and making of the city. Art and research can provide keys to accessing such a city in the making; a space where we can challenge the preconceptions of what is possible, and to imagine alternative strategies for the creation of realities. As the concept of ‘imagineering’ suggests; it is imagination-engineering possibilities to hypothetically look behind reality and shape it. Furthermore, I wish to specify ‘imagination,’ as the thought material that potential realities are made from. As the term ‘imagineering’ is heavily connected to its use in the creative economy, I suggest the wordplay of ‘de-imagineering’ (the deconstruction of imagination). I argue that the production of imagination is fundamental for the change of current conditions and should as such be re-appropriated. In this sense it’s an anarchist posture; it denounces everything that cuts us off from and diminishes our own power to act.

Not only imagination is held in the deposit and account holdings of corporate and commercial actors, but so are many of the tactics that are designed to contest this hegemony. Counter culture is continuously being transformed to fit as capitalism’s sanitizing tool in “redeveloping” cities, co-opted and instrumentalized in processes of gentrification. In my work this manifests the ethical issue of having a practice that risks to end up fueling the dominant system in opposition. A phenomenon that the Situationists referred to as Récuperation; “the activity of society as it attempts to obtain possession of what negates it,” or one could say: how strategies of resistance towards ‘the spectacle’ ends up being a vital part of it.

Based on this knowledge I’m researching which transgressive strategies, evasive yet present, could be practiced under the Lefebvrian concept of the ‘Right to the City.’ How could they be constructed, performed and shared?

Allmänningen (The Common Room)2022Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Allmänningen (The Common Room) was a Vinnova-funded project at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, Gothenburg University (2018–2021). The aim of the project was to begin to develop and pilot a new public model for collaboration and usership between the university and society. Referring directly to the Swedish commons concept of Allmänningen and illustrated through terms such as Allmän (general), Allemansrätten (right of public access), Allmänheten (the general public), the commons can be viewed as not only a right to public access, but a relation between societal institutions and the individual citizen. A relation which within the context of Sweden, could be applied and extended to a publicly funded university as a common societal resource.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

MOTHER TONGUE  / מאַמע-לשון: An interscriptual typeface2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The starting point for my degree project was the experience of an “in-betweenship”: to be in the middle of two cultures. If language is a bearer of culture and typography the body of language, as a graphic designer I was curious about what typography could be created from this intermediate position. In particular, I wanted to work with methods, tools, and expressions derived from my Jewish heritage in order to change my conditions for type construction and language.

I have explored the typographic ligature as a method and form; historically created to save time and space in typesetting, but here used to find common denominators between two structurally different scripts. One question in particular has guided my process: can I create something whole from an intermediate position – something that isn’t one or the other, but a third possibility?

The result is a calligraphic, interscriptual typeface with hybrids of Latin and Hebrew letters that can be read from left-to-right in English, as well as right-to-left in Yiddish. Based on my own poem about this in-betweenship – introduced on p.50 – the visual appearence comes from the codependency between the two scripts, a well as the compromises this merge entailed. This way, it doesn’t only represent my own hybridized experience but also the Jewish experience at large, shaped by influences from other cultures and languages over centuries of flight and migration.

Searching for possibilities in the gaps of what is known2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What I do is about finding solutions and escaping limitations. I am looking for possibilities in the gaps of what is known. My name is Oskar. I am an illustrator gone graphic designer gone somewhere else. I work with form, I work with tools. Through this report I will tell you the story of how form takes form. Of how the tools and processes we work with influence the visual language we produce, and reproduce. This will be a journey through the possibilities and impossibilities of design. I will tell you about my attempts to escape. To de-learn and relearn. I will share my tactics and my process.

For the last year I have been looking for ways to surprise myself. To ask questions that give unexpected answers. I have focused on the production of form. The dialogue between me, my material and my tools. A dialogue I want to share with you through this report.

In my project I want to use practice to reveal and avoid the limitations I find in the tools that I use. These limitations are not general and applicable to the whole field of graphic design, but are based on my practice and experience. By using doing as a way of thinking I look for and think about what I experience as limiting and how these limitations can be escaped. I believe that to look closely at the tools and processes used to make form can be a way to understand how ways of working and choices of tools influence visual language. In order to do this I have chosen to look at the tools I use the most. I want to investigate the inherit possibilities of the tools and processes that I use in my practice by questioning their methods and uses. In the process of finding new entry points to parts of my practice I hope to, in a hopeful and constructive way, produce new ideas and visual expressions instead of reproducing old ones.

It can be problematic to use few tools, especially when these tools are not consciouslychosen by the designer but by the field and the market, as the values they representare reproduced in our design. I want to discuss the importance of defining one’s tools, their uses and what they are used for. I feel that a field so heavily dependant on so few, almost compulsory tools, needs discussion and a width of perspective. No tools should be removed from the toolbox, however I think we need a wider spectrum of tools and an understanding of how they influence how we think about, think with, understand and learn through the practice of design.

    Abstract [en]

Matts Leiderstam s art and researched-based work is closely related to the history of painting. He is systematically looking for alternative, queer, narratives relating to viewing a painting. Leiderstam explores the grid as a tool for the composition of images, which was developed during the Italian Renaissance. The grid has been central to image-making ever since, including for photography, and not least for computer-generated images in a contemporary context where we are continuously connected to a global data network via our screens. The book is published with support from the Swedish Research Council and the Siri and Sven-Ivar Lind Fund, Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

My master project has resulted in an 80 page graphic novel. The graphic novel is about a dream, ”the first snow”, that is created in the heart of an animal during a dark month of December in Stockholm. The dream awakens in the animal when she gets inspiration from different commercials around the city and in her smart phone. The final version of the graphic novel was printed into a book and could be read on the spring exhibition. I also painted a wallpainting with motifs from the graphic novel at the exhibtion.

In my project, my hometown Katrineholm becomes a tool to explore form. Through visual exploration of archival material from the city, I pick apart, piece together, draw from, modify, and deconstruct to create new form. Archival material and my explorations are brought together in a publication. Memories and my intuition guide me through the material and decide what is included and what is discarded.

A Trace of Africa: Framing Empire in Strindberg's ’The Roofing Ceremony’2020In: Strindberg and the Western Canon / [ed] Jan Balbierz, Kraków: Jagiellonian University Press , 2020, First edition, p. 25-39Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the whole of his writing career August Strindberg was a restless canon-maker. In his capacity as writer, librarian, cultural scholar, polemicist and amateur researcher he constantly quoted sources, both historical and contemporary, included and excluded certain authors in his own work, as well as re-evaluated the boundaries of aesthetics and culture around the turn of the twentieth century. At the same time, he was a very active author in his own right, living in self-imposed exile but in close contact with cosmopolitan intellectual circles. All of this raises questions about his relationship with the literary and cultural canon. The dynamics between local and global culture define the whole of his oeuvre and make him one of those European authors who are readily interpreted in the context of Weltliteratur.

Strindberg was a multilingual cosmopolitan, an emigrant, theosophist, and reporter. In his capacity as a writer, with his gaze trained upon both East and West, he absorbed impressions from the universalist tendencies of the fin de siècle. His ambition to join the global “Republic of Letters” led him to study French, Hebrew, the Chinese system of logograms, Russian literature, and the history of the Middle East.

This volume, edited by Jan Balbierz, gathers contributions from renowned Strindberg scholars and discusses questions, such as: How did Strindberg construct his predecessors and which traditions did he associate himself with? How is a Strindbergian text altered in performative practice in theatre and film? How did Strindberg, whose writings are deeply rooted in Swedish folklore and landscape, relate to foreign cultural values?

In a prospective post-work society, a select group of citizens participate in a cross-temporal project. As we follow along their journeys, questions arise. How does time move when it is no longer a commodity? What is design in the age of rampant robotics? How do we define creativity? What is wasted potential, and is it possible to be a failure? Most importantly, can fiction teach us anything about reality?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In waking life, in dreams. As Leonor attends the last year of catholic school in Leiria, Portugal, a new girl joins the class, and Rita is plagued by visions of a dragon following her relentlessly.

The Monster in My Closet is a graphic novel about confronting one’s inner demons against the backdrop of a wider belief system. It depicts a journey of acceptance and realization of one’s queerness while living in a conservative, Catholic city; wrestling with lack of references, teenage insecurities, internalized homophobia, compulsive heterosexuality, and religious upbringing.

The comics draw inspiration from medieval illuminations and marginalia, subverting Christian aesthetics by exploring the tension between the Word of God and the margins, insiders and outsiders, heteronormativity and queerness, and the process of othering.

Deconstructing Thought Forms: Ett bokformgivningsprojekt om ett färg- och formsystem över hur tankar och känslor ser ut2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A book design project that shows the theories of color and form in the book Thought Forms from 1905 as an early of art- and design theoretical work.

The book Thought Forms by Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater is a theosophical book that shows "thought forms". Colourful shapes formed by thoughts and feelings, only visible for the clairvoyant. The book is believed to have inspired abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint, who were both members of the Theosophical Society. Through a series of three books, I present the color and shape systems from Thought Forms as an early art and design theoretical work.

This project is both an investigation of the influence of emotions and spiritual ideas on design as an exploration of the book designs effect on how we receive a content.

The result is a series of three books:

    Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Figures

    Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Colors

    Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Shapes

    Abstract [en]

Maija is a graphic novel about identity, family, the tumultuous and often forgotten history of the Baltic region and, ultimately, how I have sought to create a relationship to a place from which I feel so disconnected.

Using drawing as a means to bring myself closer to a lost family, as an act to record the past and also as a tool to create a possible future. Using my own hand, I am circling the past to bring it to a connecting point with my own present.

Allt det här hände2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Narrativa processer i mellanrum: serieberättandets praktik2019Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This project investigates storytelling in drawn image and text from the perspective of the graphic novelist, and it does it through practice based research.

My research method is to interview other graphic storytellers about their working methods and processes when telling stories through comics, and then try to use these methods and processes when making my own stories. In this way I hope to make visible some of the knowledge hidden inside a working method and look at what kind of stories, storytelling and reader interaction a working method can enable.

When drawn image meets text in the head of a reader, information occurs, information that was not present in the image or the text alone. Here time, space, movement, sound and full inner lives of characters might suddenly occur. I look at the comics that I have made with the help of cognitive theories of embodiment and Theory Of Mind, to try to understand what happens in the invisible space between image and text; frame and frame; and reader and graphic storyteller. In this way I hope to both widen and deepen the knowledge of how graphic storytellers can relate and make use of the readers co-creation in their work.

Narrative processes in the interspace: Investigating the practice of graphic storytelling2019In: Konstfack Research Week: 28 Jan. - 1 Feb. 2019, Stockholm: Konstfack , 2019, p. 15-Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This practice-based research project looks at graphic storytelling from a maker’s perspective. When drawn images and text, frame and frame meet in the head of the reader, new information occurs that does not exist on the paper. Time, space, movements, sound, inner lives, relations and more appears here. How does the graphic storyteller relate to this occurrence? How do they work with it?

To gain insight into the tacit knowledge that graphic storytellers hold, Emma Rendel conducted interviews about individual working methods and attempted to use those methods in the making of her own stories. Because the “extra” information that she was interested in exists in the head of the readers, she looked into theories of how our cognitive abilities interact with a narrative and used these to analyse the resulting comics.

    Abstract [en]

By owning our language and being confident in how we communicate we create our identity. But are all forms of communication equal? My degree project examines and exposes the feeling of being limited by your verbal ability.

By using visual storytelling I want to share my experiences on what it can be like to be perceived as quiet and how obstructive it can be. Society expects introverted people to practice being more assertive, but my work just creates a place for them to be. Not wanting to talk does not mean that one has nothing to say.

    Abstract [en]

“So, this is me trying to use words to describe my work which is about me not liking words. I realised early on that my best way of communicating, the language that I felt most comfor- table using, was images. But I also learned words early. I was so young that I almost don’t remember it, but I do remember lying on the floor of my room. I had green paper in front of me and then, all of a sudden, I started putting down words on it. “TL MAMA”. The reason why I was able to just put down words on my green paper, right then and there, was that I had been collecting all of them in my head before. Every day, my whole life, I captured the words and put them in my head as pictures. I traced the outlines of them with my finger against my leg.

To me words are images. You can’t speak images, but you can draw them. That is why I draw. I draw all the time. “

Every time I draw, I am wholly autistic. Every time I do anything, or don’t, I am wholly autistic.

We get functioning labels. Diagnostic criteria. A diagnosis on the autistic spectrum is only defined by medical terms and also only describes how the autistic person differs from the rest of society from a neurotypical point of view. It ignores the reality of the autistic’s experience. Experiences of autistic adults. Autistic women. Being an autistic person of colour.

Identifying as autistic is politically meaningful to me. But I lack autistic culture. I need the communal act of forming safe, separatist spaces for ourselves. This work aims to artistically portray autistic adulthood from an autistic point of view.

    Abstract [en]

Displacing the Familiar is a practice-based research project focused around the exploration of digital materiality. This writing is intended to give the reader an exposé of the thought process that has emerged out of my crafting and practice. It also presents shorter technical insights and examples of software used. This project takes it starting point in the joy of unpacking the digital technology. The urge to explore and understand the underlying processes that renders visuals material on the screen. How can a visual practice concerned with digital materiality work?
