Refugees Welcome?: A study of Structural Apathy towards refugees in Sweden- How can illustrative storytelling challenge the socio-political restrictions of independent refugee narrations in Sweden?2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 poäng / 120 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to explore the tool of illustrative storytelling to challenge governmental restrictions faced by refugee narratives in Sweden. This exploration will be done through the study of stereotypes that stigmatise the refugee’s identity. The figure of the refugee is often shaped by the visual representation one consumes via mass media and the words one hears in political debates and social discourse. Refugees are often portrayed as immigrants and nothing but immigrants, faceless victims on news, and often de-named suffering people drowning in some ocean. This portrayal makes the humanity of the refugee invisible. A human who has a face, a name, a past, a story beyond his/her refugee story, and most importantly an identity and rights.

I have always witnessed the portrayal of refugees – and myself as one of them- in the media as an act of dehumanization, a misuse of terminology describing me and my situation in political and social discourse, and the effects of these factors on refugees. I have always struggled with the entitlement this invisibility and misrepresentation gives to people. I sense this every time people talk to me, talk about me, and/or talk on my behalf. This misrepresentation always portrayed me as a ‘’problem’’. The refugee has always been a crisis, ‘’A global refugee crisis’’, ‘’An integration crisis’’, and a ‘’European migrant crisis’’. This use of terminology results in a lot of feelings that become politicised and socialised such as fear, apathy, empathy and sometimes hate.

This study will present an exploration of such feelings and their significance to the refugee situation. I will present a critical analysis on the representation of the refugee through a research on Swedish media, political discourse, and the design executed by the Migration Board’s office in Stockholm. The research will be supported by a visual outcome in the form of a graphic novel that narrates two parallel stories. One story is my own experience as an asylum seeker, and the other is a narration of the overall refugee situation in Sweden. The two stories will be treated on two different levels, a personal one and a journalistic one. Illustration as a tool here serves an aim beyond its practical aspect of depicting a narration. It is a resistance against the restrictions of filming, recording, and photographing whatever happens inside the Migration Board’s offices in Sweden. It is a significant tool that educates, interprets, and re-contextualises the right of refugees to tell their own stories as well as document and expose a history told by our oppressors. Illustration here serves an aim of narrating a story that is not institutionalised but provides the reader with cultural understanding and access to a world only the refugee can depict.

    Abstract [sv]

Committed to Memory: Remembering and Responsibility in Visual Storytelling2018Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The graphic novel form can be a visual representation of how memory works, if we understand memory to be a composite of visual, semantic and emotional systems. The interplay between text and image – a non-linear, cumulative style of reading – creates a third narrative space that mimics the function of memory.

Visual storytelling has the potential to superimpose a system onto concepts and ideas which are difficult, fantastical or simply intangible, and, by creating an emotional response in the reader, become a platform to investigate forgotten and whitewashed histories, and to revisit historical and contemporary trauma in a medium that allows for an empathetic and human understanding of an event.

In times of political and social extremism, nostalgia and the rewriting of history into ideals creates a reality that lacks specificity. Memory becomes oversimplified, generalised and reduced. Visual storytelling can remind people of the specificity of reality and the importance of remembering, envisioning and articulating our lives and the lives of others. Through graphic novels Heart of Darkness, Scandorama and Terminal this paper will investigate nostalgia and false memory, revisit eugenic and colonial histories and explore the use of drawing to remember and memorialise contemporary victims of crimes.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Key Notes on the Unruly City: Social, Material, and Spatial Transgressions2023Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This research departs from three intersecting field studies in Berlin, Copenhagen, and Paris, and includes both my interventions in the urban texture and integrations with existing communities working in the subject field of the Right to the City (Lefebvre 1968). The projects explore the mutable “nature” of cities and build on political philosophies which describe egalitarian actions that have shaped what those places could be. Laid out across three chapters (X, Y & Z) are descriptions of work processes for multiple projects that locate a social and spatial phenomenon which I call “the unruly city.”

Manufactured keys, trapdoors, dug-out tunnels, informal dissemination, bricolaged furniture, loopholes, pulleys, hatches, and shacks recur throughout the thesis; each of these tools, methods or architectural elements support a praxis of transgressivism and stealth. Even if the practical constructions, historical investigations, and cultural theory analyses explored in the thesis do not give access to the physical places themselves, they unlock rooms in the reader’s political imagination, by showing that such spaces exist.

At the core of Lefebvre’s philosophical and political argument is the call for action. Praxis is understood here as holding the potential of critical performativity: the possibility to merge culture and politics with claims of creating access to the urban and the production of space. A promise of going beyond philosophy and theory to arrive at praxis. Jacques Rancière (2019) theorizes that which is recognized as (im)possible through sensation. In effect, Rancière addresses a regulation of what can be done. By departing from such an aesthetic order of distributed sensibility, there is the possibility to make a true politics; one which can peel off the foreclosing façades of Western democracy, where the order of things is contested by, as Rancière frames it, the part which has no part. This would be an active politics that challenges the policed order of inclusions and exclusions regarding of what is felt, seen, heard, and perceived. A politics of affect, accomplished by spatial, material, and theoretical practices. In order to imagine the unimaginable—whether it is about spaces, living conditions, or coded systems—imagination must transgress into praxis: speech acts that contributes to our perception, and the other way around. Here, each work becomes a monument to the is-possible—a concrete, non-abstract refutation of any arguments which claim another way of creating or engaging with the city beyond that which is commercially sanctioned to be impossible.

Form & Formalia2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A Home Is a Portal is a collection of illustrated short stories documenting a quest for home across disparate geographies. Part illustrated book, part physical installation, the project visualizes how inherited memory and ancestral loss of homeland can transcend space and time and investigates what a path to healing might look like. Weaving together family lore, natural splendor, synchronicities with strangers, and cultural in-betweenness, the project's introspective illustrations make tangible a lifelong struggle to set down roots. Drifting between memory, daydreams, and the mundane, the work asks: Will rooting in a physical place ever be enough to conjure the feeling of home?

    Abstract [en]

For my graduation project I was interested in title cards, intertitles and captions from past films and clips. I am fascinated by their typography and art, but also the visual aspects of age and use. Aided by the writings of the artist and filmmaker Hito Steyerl, I explored the world of the poor quality image, an image that has been copied and pasted into different (mainly digital) channels of distribution. I found my own way of translating the visual language of an image with a past. Quoting one of the most retold (copied and pasted) plays; The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark written by William Shakespeare, ca 1600.

    Abstract [en]

My research is about stereotypes of women. Responding to scepticism towardsfeminist movements, my degree project aims to challenge the power structure of today’s Western society. How does visual communication play a big role in creating and/or reproducing inequalities? I have created a retro-futuristic exhibition, placed in an imaginary museum. In a utopian world based in 2050, the exhibition femme: extinct stereotypes, aims to show, explain and deconstruct how women were portrayed around 2020; how society and (pop)culture were deforming humans into stereotypical women.I have created a speculative scenario through different objects and artifacts displaying the expectations and instructions on how women should or should not behave. By showcasing the past and its conventions, this retro-futuristic exhibition questions their normality and rationality.

”I spend my days with a baby and that, patriarchy says, is not the stuff of art”*

I noticed how I partly consisted of stories I wasn’t telling; even to myself. On thoughts and feelings generated by sharing life with a child; every other week. On being a mother. I needed get them down on paper, to blast out a space for them. The process has been a turbulent ritual of (self-)validation. And the result is an epic existential drama in a fragmented graphic-novelish book format.

Knowing is often framed by language; this moving arrangement of parts helps us make sense of our surround, rendering possible ways of relating, acting, and responding. Situated yet unsettled, the play of language enables us to mediate distances, to make sense of our frames while seeking other ways of being with and for. Through dialogue, these works attempt to reroute and reorient so that we may learn to see each other — and to see ourselves.

Lines of Thought: drawing seeing talking feeling2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 80 poäng / 120 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

/Drawing/ is a noun, /drawing/ is a verb. A drawing is a finished visual expression, but it’s also an action: the exploration and expression of a thought on a surface.

What if we communicated more through drawings? What if we could ~read~ them? What if we could name lines and say words about why we like them? And what if everyone felt empowered to do it?

“Lines of Thought” is a graphic essay about Visual Literacy and Graphic Communication. A theory and practice book to enable people to draw, appreciate images and develop aesthetic taste and critique.

This project comes from my own passion for drawing, visual culture, and education in the graphic arts. I wish to share this passion with a broad audience by exploring philosophically what it takes to draw and see images, how this should not be a skill of a few and make it more democratic.

World of Desire2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 poäng / 120 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This project report offers an in-depth, detailed account of my creative process and work during my two-year Master in visual communication at Konstfack, Stockholm.

My degree project is a celebration of plurality and visual democracy. Starting with identifying different norms pervading the graphic design discipline in the Western world today, both in terms of aesthetic values and systems of thinking, I have worked to propose and visualize alternative possible futures.

Drawing has been my main carrier through an intense journey of un-learning and re-learning resulting in an artist’s book in unique copy.

With this book, I want to problematize the dominant discourses around objectivity as a utopian ideal with a suppressive agenda, while visualizing a world I can recognize myself in. I have used decoration as a method, emotion and femininity as explorative standpoints, giving space to the metaphorical, the ambiguous and the spiritual to challenge current visual norms.

This book emerges as an affirmation of my own quest for visual belonging  as a graphic designer and a woman; a testimony of the practice of drawing as actualized power.

Visualising the Invisible2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Visualising the Insivible is a project whose final materialization reflects upon our connection with

information and how it can immediately affect the way we view the world beyond and around us.

Throughout my research and the development of this project, several “meta-words” relevant to this project

had to be considered: respect, dignity, integrity and information accuracy, thus redefining a challenge

within a challenge and, more concretely, the need to contemplate upon a topic of our time that happens to

influence politics and society alike, locally, but with a global effect and long term impact.

With this project, the role of the visual communicator is highlighted in a different way. His or her role

becomes an agent in itself, a curator of information, a journalist, an invisible activist. The role of the

designer and the purpose of design as it is commercially perceived is questioned, challenged and

    confronted.

On top of the mountain: The ascendant path of success2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

An analogy between the social idea of success and the concept: on top of the mountain, using as an interactive and participative method, the activity of climbing mountains. What is success? Why do we climb the mountain? Is there enough space at the top? I try to answer these questions, by sharing thoughts and experiences with other mountain climbers, aiming to find an alternative to values like conquest, dominance, competition, independence and painful sacrifice. Do I have to play the hero to go to the top? These values reproduce a hierarchical structure that is deeply rooted in the patriarchal society, starting with our visual conceptualization of the bottom and the top, ideas on status and an oppressive one-way relationship with nature and other human nature. The final result is a short Film, which aims to reproduce a feeling that has to do with sisterhood, togetherness, care, reciprocity, equality, and gratefulness; based on the utopic idea of interdependence and thinking the top as a transitional space.

    Abstract [en]

There’s a party this evening but Tilde is feeling too awkward.

Travelling between mediums. What are the visual narratives I use in comics? What can be told better when adapted to the movie format? Which comic elements am I unable to translate to the film format? The relationship with the reader suddenly has the limitations of time, and explorations of sound. Does the experience of diving into a different medium affect how I swim in my usual field?

With a background of 17 years’ experience as a comic artist, I explore the art of making a short movie. My degree project is a stand-alone short film and a chapter from a comic in the making.

    Abstract [en]

Catherine will speak about her graphic novel and drawing practice, which she uses to explore the interweaving of time, space andmemory. In her work she is interested in using visual storytellingand comics as a way to study the other and the unknown, thevisualization of the breakdown of order within a system, and howimages change form over time, with images and identities hauntingmultiple types of production. She will demonstrate how drawingon spirit photography, archive and colonial photography and crimescene photography as raw material is a chance to re-collect theevents and people depicted and place a new remembering onthe material. In times of political and social extremism, nostalgia and the rewritingof history into ideals creates a reality that lacks specificity. Memorybecomes oversimplified, generalised and reduced. Visual storytelling can remind people of the specificity of reality and the importanceof remembering, envisioning and articulating our lives and the livesof others. Through her graphic novels Heart of Darkness, Scandorama,Terminal and Dead Man Walking Catherine will investigate nostalgiaand haunting, revisit eugenic and colonial histories and explorethe use of drawing to remember and memorialise contemporaryvictims of crimes.

How will we know what to remember2021Inngår i: / [ed] Ben Katchor, New York, 2021Konferansepaper (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Catherine will speak about her graphic novel and drawing practice, which she uses to explore the interweaving of time, space and memory. In her work she is interested in using visual storytelling and comics as a way to study the other and the unknown, the visualization of the breakdown of order within a system, and how images change form over time, with images and identities haunting multiple types of production. She willdemonstrate how a graphic adaptation of classic texts can place a new understanding of existing material, and how she uses the format to underline emotional undercurrents in written material.

Through her graphic novels Heart of Darkness, Scandorama, Terminal and Dead Man Walking Catherine will investigate nostalgia and haunting, revisit eugenic and colonial histories and explore the use of drawing to remember and memorialise contemporary victims of crimes.

What are you looking at?: The illustrator and reference material2021Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship of the illustrator to their reference material is often private. Illustrators accumulate and analyse hundreds of images in their practices to visually understand their subjects.

This paper proposes a discussion of a culture of greater visibility and responsibility when dealing with this material, in education and in personal practice. How can illustration education empower future illustrators to question the meanings and provenance of the source material that they use to create their work? Can reference material really be substituted for lived experience?

With a focus on the use of reference material that relates to the depiction of the black body, this paper will explore the ethical parameters and power structures inherent in the process, and push for discussion of how to be respectful when it comes to dealing with images that we use but do not own.
