Organising of Space: about a orphanage in Tanzania2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In my BA project, I travelled to Tanzania with a MFS stipend and experienced humanitarian architecture up close - by following architectural group Asant Collective´s project in Tanzania: a new Children Centre for a small non-governmental organization called ECONEF.

I have worked with social questions / responsibilities regarding our role as interior architects in developing countries - often feeling like a anthropologist.

In my design part, I have re-drawed the layout for ECONEF´s planned new orphanage after a analyse of the existing orphanage, culture and traditions.

    Abstract [en]

This is a project about the method of collecting, exploring properties and finding out when an object changes to another. It takes its starting point from the analysis of my collection of intuitively chosen objects, or fragments as I call them, and my interests of how space and object relates to each other and us as human beings. The outcome of my project is a collection of pieces of furniture that wants to interact with you, letting you decide how you want to use them depending on how you perceive them.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

For my project, I was inspired by old decorative painting traditions and I chose to put them in a more modern context. I am inspired by the decorative approach of handling the surface and by letting patterns and decorative elements take the limelight. In the project, I investigate the lines and the surface and how they form patterns together.

I want craft to meet function and then to bring these two elements together. My work with the furniture that my project resulted in was based on the body. I want it to be a meeting of the body, the mind and the materiality of the furniture.

    Abstract [sv]

Möbler med mönster och volym2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Att stycka en ek2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Choreography negotiates with the interior: Challenge spatial compositions with choreographical concepts2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this project, methods for architecture with choreography

is developed, by dancing, recording, notating, tracing and

carving out the movements, all through a generative process

where multiple elaborations lead to a design proposal - a

dance floor interior, an architectural structure that emerged

from the development of a method.

    Thesis question:

    Can choreography help to reformulate

space and the relationship between the

    preprogrammed spatial and improvised?

The final design proposal is a result of a process that started

with dance and results in a visual charged environment

and an instruction for improvisation. This interactive dance

floor platform influences the participant’s movements

and highlights the body awareness playfully. It is a

choreographical object and a project about how knowledge

from dance and choreography could influence the way our

surrounding is produced and also perceived.

Tillgänglig estetik2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

I live next to a corridorI have embraced the challenge of raising the quality of living for elderly residents in nursing homes or care homes. Moving from one’s private home to a nursing home or care home means moving to a safe and secure home. But for many it is also a great sorrow to move from the home one has spent many years building up. The new living quarters need therefore to give a signal that one is moving on into a new and positive phase of one’s life. The physical environment must stimulate the senses in a positive way, signalling care, creating security, happiness and well-being, and conveying a feeling of belonging. This project is limited to the corridor as an area that is a common spatiality as well as being an individual one. It should provide as good preconditions as possible for positive encounters between people and for the well-being of the residents.

    Abstract [en]

My project is not only about doing design but also about how to make it happen. Design should not remain as a sketch or prototype if you really believe in it. In reality, lots of barriers stop us to continue, such as financial preparations, safety regulations, production knowledge and also wholesale contacts and so on. These kind of things really terrify us. So, I wonder….. how hard will it be? Is there still a big barrier when every resource you can find is on the Internet? I gave it a try and I’m going to share my true story with you.

    Abstract [en]

I will start my thesis project with an analyse of current innovations in technology and new materials to find out what possible potential they may offer for new design solutions. The focus will be on inventions of disruptive technologies of the past and the present and how they change our way of life. An interesting point is to draw conclusions from how the consequences of these technological milestones impact our everyday life. An example is the influence of the internet (in the bigger and the smaller scale): it changed our way to purchase goods, to find a partner and to get e-services.

In an experimental way I will build up scenarios of a possible future based on this technological knowledge. The hypothetical utopias and dystopias will evoke new questions and theories. In the research phase I will among others illustrate classical and modern utopias and dystopias.

I will try to capture the spirit and the trends of both, visionary scientists and designer/architects/ar-tists to describe fears and hopes of the future.

    BUILDING PIECES

I want the children to explore spatiality both high and low, in both open and closed structures. By reading the literature, comparing playhouses and huts, visiting preschools and following my own child, I have come to the conclusion that I do not want to create a given space, but instead design modules so the children can create their own spatiality to include stimulating their own creativity. There are too many things that we adult control and determine how it should be after what we think that children want, but with Building Pieces they can create their own space and build their own unique piece. This will give them not only creativity, activity and quality in playing but also an opportunity to think and learn about creating different spaces and architectural phenomenon. They can build on their own, with friends or adults. Nothing is right or wrong what they are building the most important thing is that they have the choice and opportunity to do so.

    Abstract [en]

The core concept in the project includes a proposal for urban public open space and green structure planning for the city of Nynäshamn.

The work is concentrated to give form to the outdoor public space in order to increase the accessibility and availability of green areas and parks. The proposal aims to create valuable places focused on safety and comfort. But also to give form to public rooms for experences which the citizens voluntary seeks and participates if the physical environment is good. The identity of a city constitutes a great deal by its urban environment. Therefor design and architecture helps creating a uniform identity which can be reflected in the urban public spaces of the city.

    Abstract [en]

A handrail is something that leads and supports your hand – a spatial safety element that can provide both physical as well as mental guidance. How can a handrail shape a room? This project reinvents the handrail as a sculptural support. By combining strong, spatial structures with situated scents from nature, the aim is to deepen the understanding and practice of spatial design as a support system for the human body and mind. The project speculates around how scents from nature could have a calming effect on us in our stressful everyday environments.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Findings through fragmentation

Architecture is an obvious remnant of our collective past and gives us a fragment of a former life and a different time. This unique relationship between what’s new and old is a very powerful spatial opportunity. If memory is defined as ‘The faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information’ then the role of architecture comes to play is the prop for our collective and individual memories where it represents past events and people.  If we look closely at the definition of a fragment without it's context it will be read as ‘incomplete’ and subordinate to the completed it is extracted from. Architectural fragments have a power of resisting such expected unity and can be read into an alternative whole of none.

By fragmenting industrial buildings that is going to b demolished, representing a time and a group of people in Lövholmen/Stockholm, I wish to embody memory and recall spaces that will be forever lost.

    Abstract [en]

This is a furniture project for public outdoor environments, in which modules stretch out in all directions creating space within space.

The form of the modules, and of the piece of furniture as a whole, builds on abstract models of different places in the town in combination with concepts that are central for me, such as scale, repetition and number.

I want to demonstrate an example of how one can work with furniture in a public environment, as well as to develop a well-functioning piece of furniture that creates stimulating meeting-places in the town.

    Abstract [en]

Sight is the sense that gives us visual information about the world around us, and light is a prerequisite for this process. Light radiation can be measured physically with precision, but light as the experience created when light rays strike the retina of the eye is sensual, and thus both subjective, relative and complex. Like all impressions that reach our different senses, the visual experience of the outside world is created through processes that can be described from the basis of sensory, biology, physiology, perception, cognition and emotion. These processes cannot be translated into physical terms. We can measure stimuli that reaches the retina, but this gives very limited information about the experience. In the beginning, when all life existed in the sea, some organisms developed cells that were sensitive to light, allowing them to orient themselves to brighter or darker areas. This early capacity for visual information produced blurred visual impressions, only detecting differences between contrasts. Eventually, more advanced life forms developed the sharp central vision which, according to one hypothesis, appeared during a period when life had evolved into a predator prey interaction. Both these visual abilities, the blurred peripheral vision and the detailed focus vision are represented in the human sense of sight, and the blurred peripheral vision is crucial for our visual experience of the room. All the light we see is reflected from surfaces, unless you look directly into a light source. The properties of surfaces, their colour and texture in combination with the properties of the light source and the distribution of the light is what provides visual information about the room. It is through the modelling and interaction of light and colours that the experience of the room can appear with its shapes and textures, proportions, dimensions, depth and spatiality.Since electric light was introduced in our built environments about 100 years ago, light quality has been evaluated and regulated based on physical measurements, which are correlated to the human eye’s ability to register light and colour. International lighting standards for spatial environments provide detailed recommendations for light levels described in Lux or Footcandle. These measurements are based on the focus vision, which require higher light levels to function optimally. But the measurements do not provide information about the properties of the reflected light, which is what we see, nor does it include one of the basic functions of the sense of sight, which is to react and respond to contrasts. The beverage and food industries have for many years used terminologies and concept models that describe sensory properties of various products. The underlying methodology is called Sensory Analysis which is established in several different areas. Within the interdisciplinary research project Perceptual Metrics for Lighting Design, we have developed methods to measure perceived light quality for both light sources, luminaires and spatial environments with inspiration from Sensory Analysis. The project has been developed with a practice based and design-oriented approach,in close collaboration with the lighting industry. On workshops with lighting designers, we have collected words that describe the perceived character of light, shadows and contrast, and through repeated studies been able to develop the basis for a terminology to give value or measure perceived light quality in spatial contexts. An interesting and important aspect that has become apparent during the course of this project is how much light, shadows and contrasts affects the atmosphere of environments. The lecture will give an overview of the human visual perception in relation to how we perceive spatial environments, and also a description of the Perceptual Metrics for Lighting Design method and how it may be used in practice and research.

Grand Voyages:: A ticket to somewhere please!2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A journey begins with an act.

To move one's body/mind from one place to another.

The planning of where, when and how to get there.

Expectations of what to come, before, during and after.

In my thesis I turn to the notions we encounter when experiencing space. Through the bodies movement we shift our perspectives, leaning our eyes on surroundings of change, we mediate what is perceived. Telling us the story of where we have been and where we are heading to.

The fragile surface of the lace cloth covering the sunlight shine in my grandmothers kitchen window had to me an unfamiliar texture and its yellowing white colour brought a time from another generation. Drinking weak silver tea and sitting next to this curtain formed a tactile memory of constant. I don´t remember any other details from those days, other than the taste of the tea and the atmosphere created by the lace. When, during a journey in unknown lands several years after, I again saw this lace covering a window I remembered not the situation nor the tea but a sort of comfort. A memory of carrying both my past and present.

The memory of space is created both in the past and the present but also when we leave, as we remember and recall it. How do we interpret what is a part of our past, present and future? And where is the real/unreal memory of space created?

To investigate these notions I placed my self in a sort of somewhere! On the border between reality? and utopia. In an constant journey of bodies from familiar to unknown. In a place where perception of space pass through movement and time.

In an journey of memory and imagination.

    In a cruise boat.
