    Abstract [en]

Daily life resembles a textile pattern. Both are built on forever by repeating things. Both transform every second by the effect of chance. The repetition of pattern relaxes us, and the appearance caused by the chance inspires us. Both trigger a chain of imagination in unique harmony. Textile pattern is a medium to express the chance. Any pieces of daily life become a pattern. The pieces of daily life, which are discovered by the “third eye” (different angle than usual), become a point of departure of the chain of imagination. The viewers have freedom to interpret the design in the way they want. They connect their personal memories with the design, which makes the differences in reaction. The story continues to be narrated while transforming its appearance. Storytelling is a succession from designer to viewer, as if to draw a spiral. One day, I took pieces of wood. They had lines on their surface. Each line had a unique shape because they were a part of an annual ring. I saw them like a human fingerprint. There was nothing the same. Daily life as ordinary, but special days. There is nothing the same in a usual day. Pieces of wood are pieces of daily life, it is a point of departure for a chain of imagination. I narrate a story of it in textile pattern. Storytelling pattern is an endless chain of imagination.

    Abstract [sv]

Cartoon trompe l'oeil2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A room of one's own: woven structures2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I have explored the combination of sound, textile and space. How can one create textiles to use as sound dampening material in an arts and craft practice?

To enhance the architectural aspect of textile as one of the five building materials I have chosen to weave walls. Walls don´t have to be straight or go from floor to ceiling but they should somehow create room and divide the space. I felt the need of walls working within Konstfack because of the distraction of fellow students in the open space classroom. Torn walls tells a story, we see the left traces. These traces I wanted to convert into woven textile.

Sounds of people and objects in public spaces bounces between hard surfaces often without dampening, this creates an environment that causes stress and distraction. In Virginia Wolf´s essay “A room of Ones Own” (1929) she points at how important it is to create a workspace for the professional you, to take place and be part of the public realm.

A big part of this master project has been making the actual materials to build with and executing fibre. Does the material do the job of sound absorption? Wool and silk both have a fibrous cell, which is suitable for sound absorption they also have low flammability and is biodegradable; therefore I chose to work mainly with these fibres. I share my knowledge through the experience of the space I create. How to create o Room of one´s own in an open office.

Found space: emotionell design och ergonomi2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The scene of a local motorcycle taxi driver hand-knitting a small fishing net at his stand next to a canal will never fade away from my childhood memory. It was the first time I saw the life behind the fishing net. Throughout my textile practice, I’ve reconsidered the fishing net with curiosity and nostalgia. Behind its mesh and diamond shaped structure, I see craftsmanship and the story of its creation. I would like to preserve and encourage these precious values in the net with my Master project Sitting with The Fisherman. The fishing net is reinterpreted to everyday life with a trace of stories within it. The net becomes a tool to gather people together like the fishing net does in the fisherman village. This project will be a pilot idea to others in different contexts, to preserve their precious traditional craftsmanship, to keep it alive by transforming the skill and technique to a new interpretation.

    Abstract [en]

The ongoing project discusses how we as a society perceive and communicate through bodily experiences. The primary aim is to apply textile into a space and also to encourage people to use their senses when experiencing at design objects and spaces. The approach in this project is not meant to lead to a finish commercial product but rather to build up a spatial environment with textile materials and open up possibilities to use it. The challenge is for people to learn to let go of the stereotypes and think in an alternative way.

This essay documents my journey from the starting point, describes the way I think and the process of work. This paper starts by giving the background to where it all began. Then it explores the tool I use to communicate, in this time is craft. There was a turning point during the experimental project I did which intended to apply textile to interior space. The upshot was how we as a society perceive and communicate through tactility. As time went by I learnt to narrow down my ideas and the work itself into one main consistent theme. As well as the work itself, the procedure is equally as important and was introduced into this essay. The forth chapter represents one illustration of how the concept can be applied. Finally is the summary of this journey.

Postfashion: En undersökning i 4 akter om hur man finner sin egen roll i modevärlden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This project is an active exploration of subjectivities through the medium of weaving. In a narrative illustrated with woven works, the emotional trajectory of this person of mixed cultural background through Swedish society is described. First, the work is contextualized in terms of the larger politico-cultural-discursive context, entitled the outside. It is then positioned in terms of the individual context, the inside, largely dramatized as the developments in the art of western tapestry in the past century. This culminates in the final works, three of which are presented in the final exhibition. They are entitled monads, the etymology of which, in Greek, relates to the words one, alone, or singularity. Each is a conceptual microcosm proposing a different light distribution scheme. They are imprints of alternative actualizing tendencies. There could only be one; at the end of the experiment, Schrodinger’s cat is either dead or alive. The collapse involves the very structure of the ground, and is therefore embedded directly into the weave structure. But remember, each act of observation is an irreversible disturbance to the system. In the interpretation of the primary emanation arises difference, but in which direction will the pendulum swing, and on what forces does its motion hinge? Do subjectivities follow the locality assumption? Do you produce subjectivities or do they produce you?

PATTERN ATTACK: Mönster, reklam och egna uttryck i det offentliga rummet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Most people might not reflect upon textiles as anything more than the soft material in our clothes. As a crafts practitioner, I gain knowledge of woven materials that go beyond that. The knowledge of weaving and materials is developing the ideas that form the concept of this project. From the tacit knowledge, derived from years of practically working with textile materials, an intellectual understanding of materials and the worlds they construct is growing.

In this project, I decipher my own ideas of the woven structure in order to invite others to experience the universe within textiles. I look at the weave as a structure, built up by small particles in forms of threads. If seeing the weave from a distance, each repeated pattern can in turn be perceived as the smallest element. By seeing woven materials from more than one perspective, I believe that the understanding of the construction itself can develop. As this understanding grows, so does the ability to judge the quality of the material. In this line of thought, the tools used to reflect upon what materials are, how they are made and what they signify, becomes greater.

To visualise the knowledge I have of the textile structures I make, I work with a waffle weave structure, together with a dyeing technique called Ikat. I also draw connections between the woven structure and that of a map – as a tool that humans use to understand their surroundings.

The use of perspectives and scale is another tool that is used to widen our perception of the world around us. In order to create an experience of the universe within textiles and to invite others into that world, I draw parallels between the miniature scale of the woven material and larger, architectural structures.

The final outcome of this project is a textile installation, consisting of three weavings that together form a larger construction. The construction is open for people to enter and experience. Inside the construction a smaller woven piece is presented as a map over the woven world. This weaving initially contains the same information as the large structure, but on a much smaller scale.
