Tröstaren och lilla Vemod - flyger i minnet: eller Historien om när regnet kom : en skildring av berättelsen bakom min films tillblivelse2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Redheaded Man2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Illustrating the same story in three different ways explores illustration processes and demonstrates the impact of illustration on the interpretation of the story. Enhancing the transparency of creative processes places an illustrator into the highlighted position as the producer of visual content and ideas.

The story of The Redheaded Man, written by Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms in 1937, functions as a framework for this conceptual illustration research. Although the anti-narrative features of the story almost reject illustration, its polysemous nature opens a path for the variety of approaches in visualization of the text.

In the attached report I introduce three different approached and illustrated responses to the story of The Redheaded Man realized during the MA degree work project, as well as the reflections and categorization of the content and ideas behind each illustration project.

The outcome of the project addresses the questions of creative processes and illustrator’s visual decisions on both personal and meta-level, addressing the need of developing the theoretical content for the field of illustration.

Så blev det inte: Ett arbete om prestationsångest2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In my degree project I explore the importance of the void.

Many people find emptiness terrifying, and feel like it has to be filled at any price. When everything has to be made more effective, and the dream of perpetual growth is considered the most beautiful one we have, emptiness becomes even more important.

My degree project explores what emptiness is and what it does to us. Furthermore, I examine my personal relationship with emptiness through illustration, as well as illustration through emptiness. It resulted in an illustrative essay about the void, and a booth where one can read it.

    Abstract [sv]

Not Playing By The Rules2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My degree project consists of several parts: a theorethical essay, sketches, modells, photos, experiments and an installation showed at Konstfack Spring Exhibition 2014.

Departing from the infamous Fredric Jameson quote ”It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism” I have investigated the relationship between play, daydreaming and economical system.

Political scientist Wendy Brown has argued that we exist at a time in history where we have an urgent need for alternative spaces, both in the physical room and in the mind, where an alternative longing can grow. In my degree project I have taken a closer look at this space – what could it be, how does it work, what would it look like if it was made real?

By exploring play theory I try to understand how and if play can be triggered and how this can be translated into a space. By deepening my knowledge about imagination and the relation between imagination and social development, I try to seek answers to how play can be used as a starting point for change. By treating play as a space in a double sense – both as a physical room and a special place inside us, I explore the possibilities this space has for creating new dreams.

This is also a project where I try to restore my own belief in storytelling as something beyond escapism. Aiming to create an in-between, a fusion between scenography, illustration and installation, I seek to create a platform where my work can be the basis for new discussions and meetings. By exploring the performative elements of a room I want to invite the visitor to enter the image and merge with the content. I want to create a work that embraces the visitor and that can be experienced on many different levels depending on the visitor’s interest, age and prerequisites.

The essay consists of three parts. My project started with an analysis of the current economical situation. In the first part of this essay I make a summary of this research, and give a brief background to my experiences working in the gap of storytelling and economics.

In the second part I will investigate the basic functions of imagination and play, and see how our longing is linked to the development of society.

In the third part I will talk about the physical outcome of my project - my process, choices, difficulties and conclusions.

For practical reasons I have choose to put all images in a separate appendix at the end. These images shows extracts from my artistic process as well as a documentation of the installation showed at the Spring Exhibition.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In my bachelor’s project I have examined how different starting points can affect the working process and the results, when making picture books or comics. I have made around 15 experiments, in which I chose a starting point and created a story with this starting point as a framework. The starting points were related to the different components one has when making picture books or comics, such as: drawings, aspects of the book object (size, paper, flickering of pages) and relations between text and image. The purpose has been to investigate working methods, to learn more about the medium-specific qualities of the picture book, and to expand my own storytelling.

The final result is four books, in which the four different starting points are interconnected in the stories.

    Abstract [en]

I have altered selected structures by shifting scale, material and form, through utilizing the gap that occurs when translating from the two-dimensional to the three-dimensional. The result is two sculpture series: Push/Pull and Semi-Schematic. They function separately but also together, and represent different approaches to working: one being concrete, and the other being more abstract. The two series are in the exhibition placed in a stage-like installation (which also functions as a third sculpture) where the separate objects will become part of one whole that emphasize and highlight each other. Images accompanying the text is presented in a separate document.

    Abstract [en]

I love browsing through the rich flora of typography. I have long been fascinated by the beauty of letter shapes. This fascination was once an ardent romance, and now I do not shrink from asserting that the relationship has become established. Interesting graphic design often takes place in the encounter between tradition and new creations, and I like working at the cutting edge.

Book design lies close to my heart. In my degree project I am researching graphic design from an environmental perspective. I hope my book will stimulate discussion about the environment and graphic design. The idea is for the book per se to constitute part of the concept in that its form will constitute a result of graphic design from an environmental perspective.

    Abstract [en]

How we experience the world is a reflection of the way we use it. With my degree project I want to explore alternative ways of working with technology and play as tools in a creative process. It is also an attempt to broaden my own understanding of my role as a graphic designer and illustrator, seeking new and unknown ways of practicing my craft.

Mido font2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Last Font explores the development of the Egyptian (also known as Slab-serif) typefaces in the context of cultural, economic and technical changes through the 19th and 20th centuries.

Before photography, complex layouts and more subtle advertising techniques, these letterforms were developed, decorated and ornamented to the extreme in order to give commercial messages greater impact following the rapid growth of advertising that came with the industrialisation. Soon overtaken by a range of new communication tools, these were the last fonts where the shapes of the letters were allowed such a great part in the process of communication.

This paper examines the development of Egyptians through the media theories of Walter Ong (Orality and Literacy) and Friedrich Kittler (Gramophone, Film, Typewriter), rhetoric theories of Richard A. Lanham (The Economics of Attention) and visual information analysis by Charles Kostelnick and Michael Hassett (Shaping Information–the Rhetoric of Visual Conventions), in order to open up the discourse and unveil a range of new questions related to visual communication.

The work does offer not rules for the use of Egyptian typefaces, but through a broad range of theoretical reference wishes to provide new approaches to the design discourse, for practitioners from the typographic field as well as from related design and communication fields.

Closely linked to my writing is the development of Mido, my own Egyptian typeface. My discoveries while developing the typeface will contextualise the arguments, while the theoretical explorations give new insight to the construction of these letterforms.

Nattbarn: Night child2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this report I present my MA exam work ”Nattbarn” and my process from idea to finished book. I evaluate my working method and my process, and explain my intentions and the background to the story. In the end I summarize with a reflection on the final result.”Nattbarn is a graphic novel about being in an awkward age, exploring sexuality, and longing for independence. It’s a story about Ingrid, 14 years old, who prefers to be in her room, alone with her computer. Under the alias “Nattbarn” (Night Child) she hangs out on different forums, when she’s not busy googling genitals. It’s her escape from a murderously boring teenage existence and a mother who has just got together with the annoying Bosse, who tries hard without success to be likeable and fun. When Ingrid starts eighth grade, she discovers that the school photographer shares her interest in hard rock, and a secret friendship begins via the internet. One Friday when her mother is with her boyfriend, Ingrid decides to seize the opportunity – she meets up with the photographer...”This report contains both text and visual documentation.

Reno Royal2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Let's Make Language: An artistic research on Tobias Gutmann's personal visual language.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Language is part of our identity and home can be defined as the place where people speak your language. Having a multilingual background, Tobias Gutmann searches for his personal visual language. He tries to unlearn and escape conventional language patterns and explores how meaning is created through representation and context. His new language is based on systematically created abstract shapes, that underlay a defined grammar. Experimenting with unusual writing instruments, he explores playful, alternative ways of expressing ideas.

    Abstract [en]

Brackish tears" is an animated short film about the Baltic Sea’s dying sea beds. The film describes the process by which this environmental crisis occurs, focused upon the “Dead Zones” and the sea life that used to flourish there. Following a fresh and healthy sea as it is thoroughly destroyed by chemical pollutants from agriculture run-off, I intend to exhibit the vitality of sea life and the quickness by which it is gone. My hope is that through knowledge, our priorities can move towards better protection of our invaluable and irreplaceable natural resources.
