Bind: En fåtölj för Stockholms gemensamma vardagsrum2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 25,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In my thesis I have investigated how to design a comfortable seating furniture for public spaces, so that it can be produced and used in a sustainable way. This is particularly important in environments where furniture is worn at a high rate, and where repair is currently not prioritized and furniture is left to decay. In the project, I have worked site-specifically with Stockholm City Library, but designed with the idea that it can fit in several different environments. This degree project presents a proposal on how companies and municipalities can switch to a more circular way of using furniture. The design proposal presented is an alternative to an upholstered armchair. Bind is designed to be produced and used in a sustainable way, so that it can have a long and dignified life and contribute to a circular economy.

Work on track!: A train interior design concept to meet contemporary work trends and needs2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In a future vision for rail travel, trains will be designed as an activity-based whole space, with different areas for various activities, such as relaxing, socialising or family bonding. My degree project, in collaboration with SJ, proposes a concept carriage dedicated to work, analogous to spending a day at a mobile coworking space. By recognising the new ways of working, this carriage will cater for the needs of different individuals and various types of work and will include private digital meeting spaces, group compartments, collaborative open spaces and cocoon-like seating options in quiet areas. Unlike other modes of transportation, trains allow for passengers to navigate and experience different spaces. By enhancing the use of space and incorporating amenities that improve the user experience, I aim to transform the perception of long train journeys from tedious to exciting and allow a more seamless and efficient way of getting work done while travelling. Ultimately, this degree project encourages sustainable travel through user-centred design.

Unravelling the Monstrosities Within: How can characters in stop motion animation illustrate the monstrosities that live inside us and help us to be kind to them?2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper looks upon monsters as a medium; how concentration of fear can result in the demonisation of individuals. It explores how the use of craft, with a focus on stop motion animation, can be used as a tool to build empathy and help to heal fragmentations of society. Working with contemporary mythologies, crafted techniques are metaphorically related to the fragility of societal structures and collective narratives. Hand crafting references relics of consumer culture and explores variable autonomies over personal narrative, investigating imbalances of power.

The personal, the global, and the uncertain: Alternative design strategies for living with uncertainty2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Can we change the way we imagine and relate to the risks of our common world, such as plastic pollution, nuclear threats, climate change or economic crisis? With this question at heart, this thesis discusses our interaction with the mediated, and often distant, global complexities and risks.

Following the perspective of the spectator and consumer, this study weaves together literature with stories from culture, media, design and entertainment. It examines the relationship of the personal to the global by outlining five critical looking lenses focused on distance, emission, contact, disruption and invisibility.

The resulting project articulates speculative design strategies for reconfiguring our relation to two select global risks; the nuclear contamination threat and plastic pollution. What if these scenarios were real, what if we felt these values, how would the world be different? By questioning the rational, these narratives aim to trigger the imagination of alternative possibilities, and requestion our current global dilemmas.

Organising of Space: about a orphanage in Tanzania2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In my BA project, I travelled to Tanzania with a MFS stipend and experienced humanitarian architecture up close - by following architectural group Asant Collective´s project in Tanzania: a new Children Centre for a small non-governmental organization called ECONEF.

I have worked with social questions / responsibilities regarding our role as interior architects in developing countries - often feeling like a anthropologist.

In my design part, I have re-drawed the layout for ECONEF´s planned new orphanage after a analyse of the existing orphanage, culture and traditions.

It´s called being fabulous!: Genus och sexualitet i de visuella praktikerna kring Youtube-fenomenet Pewdiepie2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

It’s not called being gay.

An incomplete collection of fragments2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a project about the method of collecting, exploring properties and finding out when an object changes to another. It takes its starting point from the analysis of my collection of intuitively chosen objects, or fragments as I call them, and my interests of how space and object relates to each other and us as human beings. The outcome of my project is a collection of pieces of furniture that wants to interact with you, letting you decide how you want to use them depending on how you perceive them.

    Abstract [sv]

Going offline2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My interest in Going Offline was twofold. (1) I wanted to investigate how the entrance of a new (virtual) space had affected our understanding of the concepts of space, time and body, and what this could entail for the sole individual. (2) I wanted to, in a really hands on manner, create a small bug in an otherwise well functioning, fast and effective system of communication. In other words to intervene the course of events in my everyday life to affect myself and others connected to it. Like the small stone thrown into the water creating rings (movements) on the surface, where the closest one, which is the most vigorous, influences the next one and so on. Overall I aimed to explore the sole individual’s connection to social structures and a global phenomena.

Unheard sound: Ett projekt om att bjuda in unga tjejer, trans- och ickebinära personer till den elektroniska musikscenen och låta de ohörda ljuden höras2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 25,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Imagine how much we are missing. So many people's artistry, stories, knowledge, soundscapes that are not given space in our world.

In Sweden, two out of ten songwriters (Sveriges Radio 2022) and three out of ten employees in the tech industry (Statistiska Centralbyrån 2020) are women. What do the sounds we haven't yet heard sound like? Unheard Sound wants to let the unheard sounds be heard.

In this project, I have explored how women, non-binary and trans people can be invited to participate in the electronic music scene to make the music and tech industry more equal. The project has resulted in a hardware synth that aims to challenge current norms about how a synth should be designed. A focus on technology places the power of the sound in the hands of the user.

The design process has been driven by interviews with women working in the music industry and workshops with a primary school and an LGBTQ+ youth center.

“Archipelagic Rehearsals” – Attemptive Thinking Through Practicing Textual Artistic Research2021In: Karib - Nordic Journal for Caribbean Studies, ISSN 1894-8421, E-ISSN 2387-6743, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 1-11Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article is based on a lecture performance titled “Archipelagic Rehearsals – Abstract as Score” that was presented at the RGS-IBG conference, held jointly by the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers, in Cardiff in 2018. The presentation was an exploration of a possibility to practice, in Édouard Glissant’s terms, “archipelagic thinking” by presenting a lecture with interaction from the audience, as a lecture performance. That “archipelagic experiment” is continued in the article through an attempt to format the performance as an academic text. In turn, the text is an attempt to create new imaginaries and storytelling with Spanish slugs through participatory artistic experimental practice. The writing as artistic practice offers the potential for becoming and as such it is unpredictable in its outcome. The article starts with the author’s framing of Glissant’s poetics and attempts a feminist and more-than-human approach to present the event – the performance of the lecture and the story of the slug in footnotes that were an integral part of the lecture.

    Abstract [en]

In 2009, the Swedish artist Katja Aglert embarked on an artistic residency research trip to the Arctic. This became the starting point for her project 'Winter Event - antifreeze'. Five years on it has, using repetition and reiteration as its main artistic methods, turned into a complex multi-branched structure, of which this book forms a part and constitutes the finale. The project proposes a different narrative of the Arctic, dissects clichés of romanticism and mysticism related to this context, and deconstructs heroism and so-called discoveries from a norm-critical perspective. The book is the result of a collaboration between Aglert and the curator Stefanie Hessler and includes documentary images by the artist, reference material from a variety of other resources, an extensive introductory essay by Hessler, as well as specially commissioned texts by renowned theorists Lisa Bloom and Sabeth Buchmann.

Rum för bildskapande2007Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

For my project, I was inspired by old decorative painting traditions and I chose to put them in a more modern context. I am inspired by the decorative approach of handling the surface and by letting patterns and decorative elements take the limelight. In the project, I investigate the lines and the surface and how they form patterns together.

I want craft to meet function and then to bring these two elements together. My work with the furniture that my project resulted in was based on the body. I want it to be a meeting of the body, the mind and the materiality of the furniture.

Tröstaren och lilla Vemod - flyger i minnet: eller Historien om när regnet kom : en skildring av berättelsen bakom min films tillblivelse2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Paint Against the Machine: Konstnärliga processer inom digitalt måleri2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

I stand in front of the remnants of a building. Braces and beams create a silhouette against the sky. The walls and roof are missing, but the windows remain, and the sheet metal doors. The structure frames the emptiness. This former building became a metaphor for man. Vulnerable in the face of a sudden turn of events, we lack protection against the world around us. Only our skeleton, muscles and naked skin hold us together. And just as eyes are said to reflect the soul, the leftover windows provide a hint of the former building’s life. The windows became the key to this building’s history. We are dependent on our buildings, just as the buildings are dependent upon us. In times of change, our social structures support us. Our life cycles are the course of events that allow us to move on, change, and be unique. Marks are left with the passage of time. Facades can be open, opened, forced, closed, covered, empty, or ready to be filled. Facades can be the time that passes. We are facades in transition, but stable in our foundations.Nothing is really alive until there is something missing, and the opportunity to place ourselves into a context arises. And in that aspect, the emptiness following the fall of the Twin Towers is therefore more telling than the buildings themselves.Everything we see in a building tells a story. In this essay, the story of Berlin’s House of Parliament is told. I reflect on how man mirrors his present in a building that is in a process of transition and how we are forced to confront ourselves with its history. I consider how a new dimension is created when something is opened, handing over the inside to reveal its past. How time can alter a symbol’s meaning. Today the dome on the House of Parliament represents democracy, as opposed to one hundred years ago, when it stood for power.Facades are in constant change.Does a facade need to be affected by transformation, deconstruction and destruction so that we can understand its whole, or are there other ways to penetrate its surface? Is the structure’s ability to evolve andadapt that which fascinates us and allows us to see its possibilities? Both man and building need “change” in order to illustrate their past and interpret their present. This is most apparent in the moment that the "facade cracks". In the vacuum that is created, it becomes obvious that the present is not forever. To exist in the present, is to be in a state of change.

Aziza's Friendship Compendium, 1st Edition (Annotated and Expanded)2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aziza's Friendship Compendium, 1st Edition is my illustrated textbook that is part-compendium, part-manifesto. It provides a social, cultural and political analysis of friendship as an inherently anti-oppression, radical tool of resistance.

This study of friendship investigates the form and function of friendship, as well as how neoliberalism and the patriarchy cause friction in its functioning, and the ultimate fantasy of friendship that is possible through its untangling of systems of oppression.

The Annotated and Expanded version of the Compendium shared here details the process and outcomes surrounding this publication and my master's degree project as a whole. This project is an argument for friendship, a celebration of friendship, a dissection of friendship and a resurrection and recontextualisation of friendship.

‘Nobody puts Baby in a corner’: A critical response to apartments and furniture designed based on modernistic ideals.2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My study challenges the status quo that seems to exist in the design of modern apartments, which is heavily influenced by the modernistic movement that flourished in early 20th century. Modernists strived to create a just and equal society, by challenging the social order and the traditional hierarchical system. The architecture of the time reflected these ideals and ultimately resulted in simplistic and repetitive designs that often formed box like interiors with standardised furniture. Consequently, these designs are detached from the individualism of the inhabitants, forcing people to sit, sleep, dine and socialise in a predefined space in a prescribed manner.

My project is an artistic intervention to the BOX - the soulless interior of modern apartments. My aim is to explore and imagine alternative ways of existing within the box and push the boundaries of how we conduct daily activities in the living space.
