Face to face revisited
University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, The Department of Design, Crafts and Art (DKK), Ceramics & Glass.

Abstract [en]

To encounter the other; be it a physical other or the encounter with the self, a self that we do not always recognize; could be described as "Face to face". How to represent that face? Either one has a face. How does that other or that self look like? It is an ambiguity that cannot be presented in absolute answers but in a speculative manner. During the process of this thesis, the encounter with Emmanuel Levinas and his thoughts about the face have been of help to understand the face otherwise. Some of his thoughts support the development of this thesis and some of the described works have been contextualized within his thought. This is an artistic investigation that offers a divergent perspective of the encounter with the other, the self and the face represented through its absence, the idea of the face. Part of this thesis consists in the production of 7 works that attempt to represent this paradox in a cross border manner, exploring the idea at various levels, in different materials and mediums such as ceramics, sculpture, video, sound and photography.
