Abstract [en]

Body Transformation is a research project within the context of visual communication that explores alternative ways of portraying muscular women. As muscularity has long been considered a male trait and an expression of masculinity, power and strength, this project also investigates how female muscularity together with body language can break the notion of women as soft, fragile and weak.

Girls, the result of this project, is an animation showing physically strong women engaged in carrying out specific movements and poses that demonstrate a sense of empowerment. Concealed behind the bright, colorful and glossy surface, lies an urge for these muscular women to break free from society-enforced limitations of objectification and sexualization in visual culture. With their supreme physical strength and kick-ass attitude, they smash, demolish and shatter classical notions of femininity.
