I investigate the public space and its possibilities for and need of a critical artistic examination in urban developments. I examine here the spaces-in-between as physical spaces and as concept in the densification of the emerging city of Vega in Haninge municipality, one of Stockholm Region’s eight future city centers. Informed by Foucaults concept of heterotopias (Foucault, 1967: 3-4) and my own earlier artistic investigation of the public space, I define spaces-in-between as spaces in the public domain without specific use or identity, in the heart of city architecture.
In an artistic investigation that involves citizens and urban planners to participation in a sound installation I emphasize the need of spaces-in-between as an assurance for a democratic and open ongoing discussion with many voices about what kind of society we should create together towards social sustainability. I also point out the spaces-in-between in the public space as places where initiatives for shared activities should be encouraged.
