Abstract

Home Office

– a combination

Craft is central in my work. A large part of my practice concerns a specific textile craft, namely patchwork. I have modified the technique in terms of style, skill and material to enhance the techniques ability of expression. I put my new version of patchwork in relation to todays view and worship of labor in swedish society. I try to find a way to relate my own work-identity to the image provided by politicians and the media, and I do this through craft. The Amish have a strong quilt tradition that is closely connected to their religious beliefs, both visually and fundamentally. In this essay I want to look at my own practice as determined by a social situation and compare it with to how they use craft in their tight and isolated community. What function can craft have, other than for everyday use objects?
