In this essay I revisit the thoughts and processes that led to the work shown in my degree exhibition Images of Desire: a group of six quilts, each of them based on an image from the online market platform ebay. The text deals with the quality and sensibility of the ebay image, second hand circulation and sourcing of material, price as a reflection of different value systems and alternative platforms to distribute artworks.
For a long time I imagined the quilts should recirculate on ebay after they had been exhibited. With the shift of context, I was confronted with some decisions on positioning and categorizing which raised questions about the fundamental character of the work. It left me with a lot of loose ends and lack of answers. In the essay I try to backtrack and pick up the threads to understand what is at stake in the work. I ask the question: where does it start and where does it end?
Through the text I relate my thoughts to Susan Sontag’s concept of camp, Hito Steyerl’s ideas on the poor image and the potential of mass media in relation to art as presented in Seth Price’s essay Dispersion.
