The industrious work of updating: : A case study regarding contemporary art-based didactic method and resources in the classroom of art education. (English)
Abstract [en]

This case study deals with questions regarding contemporary art in Swedish high school art education. Which potential hindrance and gains is identified in a contemporary art-based approach? Resources in relation to the classroom and the students creative process is in my point of interest. My attempt in this case study is to follow students as they create art in a project where the values of contemporary art is highlighted. I use the design for learning-perspective to design the project but also to analyze their process, visualize it and to talk about resources. An additional theory in this case study is inspired by the works of Michael Foucault and his studies of power-relations. The perspective is applied on this study in an attempt to contextualize the process with concepts like surveillance.

In the exhibition I will use my findings to express the difficulties of change in methods and structures by adding new recourses. In my own process, which I intend to visualize, I have been reading a lot of literature about power-realtions - which is why I show a watercolour painting with a Swedish “Luciatåg” – which is a mandatory tradition in Swedish schools. I painted the sketch of panopticon, which for me, has a strong connection to Foucault. The two-piece painting, bringing a pineapple to a classroom is about bringing new resources to school. To communicate the art education aspect of my thesis I will invite the visitor to paint. A table covered with watercolour paper and equipment will stand in front of the paintings. An overhead-projection will welcome anyone who reads it, but also ask for something difficult if you read the small text written upside down. It will ask you to make something digital from the analog equipment. A meta comment on myself and the results of my case study.

I will hang my student’s artwork side by side with my own, which was a part of the plan at the start of the project. The fact that they knew they were going to be a part of the exhibition seemed to have motivated them according to interviews of the study.
