Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In my degree project, I investigate the interplay between content and form, with particular focus on the book, its role in today’s society, and the medium’s historical heritage and limitations. The project aims to illustrate the force and potential in form, materiality, and perception — in short, emotion — in relation to content.

Today, emotion is often used as an instrument for evoking interest and motivation. We can see it being used in art, film, music, politics, activism, advertising, journalism. We rarely feel it in academic publication and scientific literature, but all the more often through modes of expression such as fiction and poetry.

Experimental and feminist book design can be applied as a tool for mediating and enhancing emotion in text. Why has emotion and affect so seldom been deployed as methods in book design throughout history? Why have certain text formats been given prominence, ascribed with respect, legitimacy, and authority, while others have not? To problematise the conventional book format, and its lack of emotion, illustrates larger structural tensions in society between emotion and intelligence, affect and rationality, narrative and science.
