Abstract [en]

Which one is real?

What we call “reality” is something perceived differently by different individuals, one could say that only physical and visual phenomena can be a shared experience. I consider there to be two kinds of reality. One is the phenomena, for example a particular event taking place, constituting one kind of reality. The other is the individual’s perception of that event, and thus a reality more in par with an illusion. The urge to identify the gap between those two kinds of realities provides me with a motivation to create my art. Suppose you happened to see a mirage of an oasis in the middle of the desert, the oasis continues to be nothing physical but an illusion. Here we can imagine two different personalities, one who continue to strive towards the oasis with an unbent belief in its existence, and the other taking a different route not believing in its existence. In either case, each will continue depending on their own believes. If we cease efforts to believe our own versions of reality in the presence of illusion, it will only lead to stagnation. In other words people walk towards an oasis even though this is merely an illusion. Yet, if we stop believing in the unreal we will stagnate as humans.

It may be that reality could be something with no substance just like the mirage of an oasis in the desert, and people may be moving their bodies in response to this disguised insubstantial reality. This idea is the starting point for the works I create. I would like to prove to viewers of my works that their own emotional confusion, suspicion, happiness and expectations were triggered by the physical phenomena of certain objects. Those emotions were born out of their conscious or subconscious attempt to create their own versions of reality. In a sense, this can be compared to wearing differently coloured glasses. The cultural background of a person will contribute to create the difference in the colours of the glass and therefore determine what reality is seen/perceived.
