Through the Grid

Abstract [en]

Colour comes first, colour in different consistencies, liquid and solid, is my main material. With a focus on the process, my masters project has led me to use several different techniques and methods with textile painting as my primary one. I have worked by the motto make — look / listen — repeat. Questions I have asked myself derive from the act of making, such as reflections on my work in relation to image construction and how I contextualise my practice.

The grid structure has worked as the centre and outline of my project. The grids I see are everywhere, in building reinforcements, in the pattern of paving stones, in the woven grid of a canvas, in image construction and in the feed on my phone. I wanted to understand this stable structure, learn more about it in relation to the history of art and craft, to be able to challenge it.

By the means of painting and textiles, I have explored the grid and image construction. A textile can be used, folded or wrinkled, it can be draped, torn and patched up. It is free to constantly evolve. My aim has been to understand and shake the grid, challenge the frame and the flat format, through enhancing the textile qualities of my work. I have come to think of my practice as a painterly but still consider it to be textile based.
