Abstract [en]

Architecture and furniture design share a fundamental connection, with each informing and inspiring the other. As a cabinetmaker and architect, I have come to appreciate this connection deeply. In this thesis project, I aim to explore this relationship further by studying the exterior architectural elements of Midsommargården in Telefonplan, Stockholm. I will use the building as inspiration for designing and building furniture.

The project highlights the iterative process and juxtaposition as key elements in the design methodology allowing for creative expression, experimentation with different materials and techniques and reflection on the work.

I have chosen not to limit myself to producing furniture specifically for any needs of this building. This decision reflects my wish to focus on exploring design. I still want to include the importance of site specific furniture and emphasise the subject in my the conclusion, as it conveys a story, connects to the architecture, and enhances the ambiance of a space. By considering these factors, we acknowledge the significance of what individuals take away from a place and what they remember about it.

The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part provides a background on the methodology used and defines the purpose and objectives of this project. The second part introduces the reader to the context of the building I have worked with. It includes an exploration of three selected architectural elements and their respective interpretations. The third part covers a conclusion and reflection.
